Use a script. It’s normal to mumble, have filter words such as “ah”, “um” or not know what to say at times, so ensure that you have your script in place. Notes and dot points are helpful too so you won’t sound too “scripted” or “memorized”. Have your notes with you to read on before recording and press record when you’re ready.

Pretend as though there’s a friend in front of you, to whom you are talking. Better yet, pretend that the camera is your friend. Imagine your friend there or that you’re talking to somebody about a particular topic. You can even pretend you’re picking up a girl, or a guy so you have the eye contact, rapport, and such working in your favor.

Try a teleprompter. If you don’t want to be holding your script then you can have a teleprompter. That helps with the eye contact and ease in speaking.
    • Use an iPad and reflective mirror for your teleprompter.

Breathe and smile. Many people look more uncomfortable on camera because they don’t relax themselves. Smiling helps to release the tension in your muscles and it’ll make you look better on camera too.

Tips

  • Practice reading your script out loud and with feelings before facing the camera to get a feel of what you’ll say when you’re ready.
  • You can use your errors as bloopers/outtakes in your post production! It breaks the pattern and therefore it makes your video a lot different than others.
