How to Organize Large Amounts of Folders on Your PC

Folders, quite possibly the most annoying thing you will ever find on your hard drive. Well, fear not, they can be resolved.

Steps

    Use disk usage analyzer software to figure which folders are vacant. Empty folders can be the most unnecessary and confusing things ever.

    Delete these empty folders.

    Categorize your folders. Adjust the file manager View to Print a list, detailed list, icons or tree view.

    Create specific folders for different categories.

    Categorize your folders within their respective category into sub-categories. For example, if you have a folder entitled "Sophomore Year Classwork", you might have sub-folders such as "History", "Math", etc.

    Keep creating smaller and more specific folders.

    Repeat steps 5-6 until the folders at the end of the hierarchy are manageable in number.

    Move the folders around into their respective categories.

Tips

  • Name each folder, so that they are easily recognizable.
  • Once done, you should have a hierarchy of folders from general to very specific, which contain the actual files.
  • Remember, folders take up no space, so feel free to make your hierarchy as detailed as you want.
  • To quickly move folders, highlight the target folder(s) and right click and cut. Open the new folder and paste on white space.
  • For simplicity's sake, do not put only one folder into another. Instead, bypass the higher folder all together.

Warnings

  • Do not delete system folders. If your computer asks you if you really want to delete this folder because it is important, it is best not to.
