How to Obtain a Swedish Passport

Two Methods:Obtain a Swedish passport for a child that is under the age of 18.Obtain an emergency passport.

The requirements to obtain a Swedish passport are stringent - you must have Swedish citizenship. Knowing where, when, and how to apply will limit the time and money that you spend on this process. The following is a guide on how to obtain a Swedish passport.

Method 1
Obtain a Swedish passport for a child that is under the age of 18.

    Visit an Embassy of Sweden with the child.
    • Make sure that the embassy you visit offers passport services. Typically, only 1 Embassy of Sweden in each country offers such services.

    • One form should be completed by each parent.

    Provide legal proof of guardianship.
    • Only do this if 1 parent has been given custody of the child.

    Provide the child's birth certificate.

    Provide a copy of the legal guardian's marriage certificate (if married).

    Provide documentation from the Swedish Migration Board that certifies that each legal guardian has regained Swedish citizenship.
    • Only do this if you gained citizenship in your current country before July 1, 2001.

    • Contact the relevant Embassy of Sweden for the fee to be paid.

Method 2
Obtain an emergency passport.

    Visit an Embassy of Sweden in your country that provides passport services.

    Provide an application for an emergency passport.
    • This may be obtained at the embassy.
    • An emergency passport is for people who must travel urgently that do not have a passport. It is valid for 7 months or 1 journey, whichever comes first.

    Provide 3 recent passport photographs.

Tips

  • If you are in Canada, the Embassy of Sweden in Ottawa is the only place you may apply for a Swedish passport.
  • If you wish to obtain an emergency passport for a child, additional requirements apply. Contact your local Embassy of Sweden for instructions.
  • If you are over the age of 18, you should already have a Swedish passport.
  • If your passport is damaged, your local Embassy of Sweden will replace it for free if it is due to manufacturing defects. If your passport is damaged for other reasons, you must apply for a new passport.

  • Your passport may be retrieved at any Embassy of Sweden in your country after it has been processed.
