How to Make Your Room Look Cheery on a Dreary Day

Ever feel sad because it's raining outside and your world is far from perfect? Rain seems to have an effect on our mood, making us grumpy or sad. Rainy days just aren't much fun, are they? Well, there's a way to make your room seem as cheery as summer sun on dreary days.

    If you have curtains, open them! More light shining into your room will probably improve your spirits.

    Hang a brightly colored window cling or dreamcatcher in your window. Dreamcatchers usually make people feel good, and bright colors on windows improve their mood even more. Also, legend has it, dreamcatchers give people good dreams, and on a yucky day, good dreams are absolutely essential.

    Cover up with a brightly colored blanket. When cold, choose a bright quilt that makes your eyes pop. If you don't have one with bright patterns and designs, then choose one of a bright color, such as orange, yellow, or pink.

    Warm cocoa! Most people warm up and cheer up when they drink hot chocolate or something else warm. Cocoa is definitely the first option, but if hot chocolate isn't available, warm milk or tea should do the trick.

    Settle down and read a good book. Reading, all cuddled up in a blanket, is thought to lift many people's spirits. Or, if you'd rather not read, you can watch an episode of your favorite TV show either on TV or online. A good movie would also work.

    Listen to fast music. Lots of people cheer up when they listen to music with a little bounce in it. Make sure the beat is super fast and bouncy. Most slow or sad songs decrease people's spirits, so don't listen to those songs. If you don't know what song to listen to, go to YouTube and look up "cheery songs" in the search box.

    Get up and move! While listening to that fast song, move! Dance! Do cartwheels! Anything that'll get you up and get your blood flowing! You don't even have to dance! Just shaking your hips or twirling is believed to improve your mood. Let yourself go! Be crazy! You can do a disco, shake your hips, dance, twirl, cartwheel somersault, or even just walk!

    Do a service to your community! Studies show that helping out with local problems can improve your spirits. If you're a kid, you could write letters to soldiers overseas. If you're a teen, you can volunteer at your local animal shelter or animal rescue. If you're an adult, you can put together projects for your kids or the society, and donate to research funds.

  • Avoid problems that make you upset.
