It's easier than you think to have luscious, healthy lips. If you're having trouble with chapped lips, follow these simple tips.

Part 1
Adding moisture

Always carry a moisturizing lip balm or lipstick with you. In addition to forming a moisture seal on your lips with petrolatum, beeswax, or oil,[1] a good lip balm will nourish your skin with vitamin E, jojoba oil, or whatever else you find most effective for your skin.
    • Whether it’s summer or winter, make sure your lip balm has an SPF protection of 15 or higher, which will keep your lips from burning and flaking.

Use lip balm as a base for your lipstick. This will create a protective moisture seal beneath your makeup, not to mention make it easier to apply.

Use a moisturizing lipstick in the daytime, then switch to lip balm at night. Wake up in the morning with smooth lips.

Drink plenty of water. Staying hydrated is a great way to keep your lips moist. Drink at least eight cups of water daily. Water helps to keep your skin clear,[1] to say nothing of the benefit it will have on the rest of your skin.
    • Avoid thick or dark-colored lipsticks. A thinly applied, semi-transparent lip stain will show off the texture of your lips, making them appear smoother.

Add moisture before sleep. Here are some suggestions:
    • Apply a little bit of baby oil your lips. Put it on before you go to bed.
    • Put Chapstick on at night. Be aware that this isn't for every person; it can actually make lips drier for some users.
    • EOS is great to apply when you either are going to sleep or going to begin your day.

Part 2
Exfoliating the lips

    1
Exfoliate your lips. Dip a plain toothbrush in petroleum jelly or Vaseline, then use it brush all the dead skin off your lips. Alternatively, mix a tablespoon of honey with enough sugar until you get a body-scrub-like texture, the scrub it across your lips with a toothbrush. Exfoliating will leave them smoother and make them look healthier.

Use a coconut scrub on your lips. Leave on for 5 minutes. This will reduce the amount of dead skin cells and blockage.

Remove dead, dry skin on the lips using one of these other approaches:
    • Use warm water to add to a toothbrush and gently get rid of the dry skin.
    • Put sugar and Vaseline on your lips then rub your lips. It will get the dead skin off.

Beware! Don't over-exfoliate your lips. This action, done too frequently, will strip away the natural oil leaving dry and flaky lips.

Part 3
Keeping lips safe from environmental harm

Avoid eating salty foods that leave a buildup on your lips. Salt draws moisture out of things, which is why people use it to dry and preserve meat. Eating Cheetos, for example, will leave a salty orange powder around your mouth, causing your lips to dry out.

Cover your face in windy or cold weather. Tucking your mouth and chin beneath a scarf during bad weather will help protect your lips from the elements, especially wind.

Part 4
Avoiding bad habits

  1. Image titled Make Your Lips Smooth Step 12
    1
Avoid licking your lips. Saliva dries out your lips, especially since licking your lips is a quick way to remove both lip balm.[1]
  2. Image titled Make Your Lips Smooth Step 13
    2
Throw away cheap, smelly, flavored chapsticks. These will tempt you to constantly lick your lips.
  3. Image titled Make Your Lips Smooth Step 14
    3
Don't bite your lips. This habit will not only scrape away the protective seal formed by your lip balm, but can also cause trauma to your delicate skin.
  4. Image titled Make Your Lips Smooth Step 15
    4
Breathe through your nose. Breathing through your mouth dries out your lips just like windy weather.[1]

If your lips do get chapped, don’t pick them. It disrupts the healing process, makes them look blotchy, and can cause bleeding.

Tips

  • Make sure that the toothbrush you use scrub the Vaseline on is relatively soft. Otherwise hard bristles could take off the skin that needs to be there, the live skin.
  • Exfoliating your lips. Then, apply lip balm.
  • Put a warm green tea bag on your lips for 2 minutes then apply Chapstick.
  • Always keep a lip balm that contains things such as olive oil,Shea butter, coco butter, etc. this will help your lips to always stay hydrated.
  • Try Vaseline lip therapy. It's not just like the original petroleum jelly.
  • Try to use moisturising lipstick, as normal lipstick dries out your lips.
  • Vaseline is really good.
  • Apply milk to your lips for greater smoothness.
  • Apply lip balm when you wake up in the morning, and before you go to bed at night. Don't forget to apply it before you apply lipstick as it will protect your lips from the harmful affects cheap lipstick can produce.
  • Sugar before bed can help. Wet your lips with water and then dab on a little sugar. Then, wash with warm water in the morning.
  • Don't use chapsticks/lip balm as they contain acidic crystals that can make your lips dry.
  • Don't use cheap lip balm as it could make your lips irritated.

Warnings

  • Remember to dampen or to moisten your lips before you use sugar to exfoliate as lips are very delicate.
