Healthy hair looks and feels soft and somewhat silky. If your hair has become too dry and brittle, it has probably lost the natural oils that your hair uses to lock in moisture It is very easy to stay in this stage, but since it isn't a difficult problem to remedy, why not give some of these suggestions a try? At least one is bound to suit your hair's texture and needs.

Hair masks

Try a mayonnaise mask. However, do not use mayonnaise if you are allergic to eggs. Mayonnaise is made of emulsified egg yolks and oil, and works by supplementing your hair with the oils it needs to be shiny and full. Completely coat your hair in mayonnaise and leave it for thirty minutes. Use full-fat mayonnaise for the best results. Once the mayo has soaked into your hair, rinse it out with warm water followed by a regular wash of shampoo and conditioner.

Massage egg oil into the scalp and leave on overnight twice a week. Egg oil contains:
    • Long chain polyunsaturated Omega-3 fatty acids like Docosahexanoic Acid (DHA) which revitalize the follicle cells.
    • Anti-oxidant Xanthophylls like lutein and zeaxanthin which arrest premature aging (graying).
    • Immunoglobulins which reduce inflammation.
    • Cholesterol which brings luster and shine to hair as well as eliminates dandruff.

Give yourself a gelatin mask. To restore protein to your hair, mix one tablespoon of gelatin (unflavored) and one tablespoon of warm water and coat your hair. Let the mixture stay on your hair for ten minutes, and then rinse out. Follow this by using your regular shampoo and conditioner regimen and also use natural herbal shampoos and conditioners

Use a hibiscus mask. Blend the leaves of a hibiscus plant in a food processor until it forms a paste. Apply this to your hair, focusing on the scalp and roots. Let it set for thirty minutes, then rinse out with warm water and shampoo. Hibiscus also prevents premature graying.

Method 2
Aloe vera

Use aloe vera. Use aloe directly from a plant or find 100% bottled aloe vera. Apply the gel to your hair, massaging it in around the roots and working towards the tips. Let this sit in your hair for two hours or more, and then rinse it out. Follow this with a regular hair wash using shampoo and conditioner.

Method 3

Use avocados and banana. Mash one whole avocado and one banana together to form a paste. Massage the paste into your hair, making sure to cover all of your strands. Allow the mask to set for an hour, and then rinse out. The combination of avocado and banana work to soften split ends and add elasticity to your locks.

Apply avocados and egg yolks. Blend the avocados and egg yolks together. Make sure it forms a well mixed paste. Then apply it to your hair and leave it for thirty to forty-five minutes. After, you may rinse your hair with cold water. This helps your hair to stay fresh and healthy.

Try boiled apples. Boil 1-2 apples (depending on the length of your hair) until they are soft. Remove from the water and blend into a thick paste. Allow the applesauce to cool slightly, but while it is still warm apply it to your hair. Leave it for thirty minutes and then rinse with shampoo and conditioner.[1]

Soften your hair with eggs. Combine three egg yolks with 1 tablespoon of olive oil and 1 tablespoon of honey. Beat the mixture until it is well mixed, and then apply it to all of your hair. Let this sit on your hair under a shower cap for thirty minutes, then rinse. Use shampoo and conditioner to completely remove all traces of the egg. Shower with warm but not too hot water as it may cook the egg yolks in your hair making it difficult to remove. If you do not like the smell or mess of raw eggs, you can also buy a ready egg oil. This also eliminates the risk of salmonella infection or allergy coming from raw eggs.[2]

Method 5

Spritz your hair with beer. Beer? Oh yes, beer. It works wonders in adding shine and body to your hair because of its high vitamin B contents, phospholipids and several other minerals. Pour beer (any kind) into a spray bottle, and after you finish showering spritz it into your hair. If you use a blow drier, the smell of the beer will dissipate with the heat.

Method 6
Caring for your hair

  1. Image titled Make Your Hair Soft and Silky Step 1
Avoid washing your hair daily. Your hair follicles produce natural oils (lipids) which add shine and softness; washing your hair repeatedly with harsh chemicals (such as those present in most shampoos) removes these oils. While removing them is necessary as they build up and become greasy in appearance over time, washing your hair every day can strip away the healthy oils. Wash at least once a week and no more than twice a week for the right balance.
  2. Image titled Make Your Hair Soft and Silky Step 2
Avoid dyes. The pre-treatment (usually with ammonia) makes the hair strand weak and the follicles damaged. Repeatedly using hair colors will make your hair dry, dull and lifeless.
  3. Image titled Make Your Hair Soft and Silky Step 3
Stay away from heat products. Using blow dryers, flat irons, and curling irons burn your hair and create split ends. This dry, fragile, and broken hair will be difficult to smooth and appear dead and dull. Try using heating tools as little as possible, or avoid them altogether. Always let your hair air dry after you wash it. If you must use a blower, use it without heat.

Take vitamin supplements. Certain supplements, such as Omega-3 oil, fish egg phospholipids, and vitamin E, improve the shine and growth of your hair. Purchase these in a gel-capsule form from a local health food store, and take them on a daily basis.
  5. Image titled Make Your Hair Soft and Silky Step 5
Trim off split ends. Over time, your hair will look damaged and dry if it is not trimmed as a result of split ends. Take time every 3-4 months to get a hair trim, and watch the shine of your hair significantly improve.[3]

Method 7
Oil treatments

Soak your hair in oil at night. Before you go to bed at night, give your hair a coating of olive oil [[1]] or egg oil [[2]] and wrap it in a shower cap and bandana. Massage the oil into the roots of your hair all the way to the ends. Sleep with your hair wrapped in the olive oil mask or egg oil, and then rinse out with shampoo in the morning.[4]
  2. Image titled Make Your Hair Soft and Silky Step 8
Do a hot oil treatment. Heat four tablespoons of coconut, olive, almond, or castor oil in a pan until it is warm to the touch (not hot). Pour this warm oil into your hair, and use your fingers to massage it into the roots and scalp. When all your strands have been coated with the warm oil, put a shower cap over the top and then wrap the outside of the shower cap with a hot towel. The heat from the oil and the towel will open the pores in your scalp, allowing the oil to soak in and work wonders on your hair. However, using hot oil can bring on premature graying.

Method 8

Condition your hair with apple cider vinegar. Combine ½ a cup of apple cider vinegar with 1 cup of warm water. Spritz it into your hair after you wash it, and allow it to sit for ten minutes. Then, rinse again, but without shampoo. This works to add shine and reduce dandruff, a win-win! However, the acetic acid in vinegar weakens hair strands and hence this most be used no more than twice a year.
