How to Make Vegemite Snails

Vegemite snails are ideal party snacks for kids and adults alike. Fantastically easy to make, they're tasty. And if you don't much fancy Vegemite, you can use other spreads instead.

Ingredients

  • 2 sheets of ready-made rolled puff pastry
  • Vegemite spread (marmite, promite, yeast extract spreads are all good choices)
  • 1 cup grated cheese, quality flavour

Steps

    Preheat the oven to 200ºC. Line the baking tray with baking paper.

    Place the pastry sheet out on a clean surface. Cut it in half. Repeat with the next sheet.

    Spread each half with Vegemite. Sprinkle over the cheese evenly.

    Roll each pastry sheet up tightly into a roll. It should now be shaped like a log.

    Slice thin pieces right along the length of the log. You will now have little spiral shaped rounds – these are the "snails".

    Place the snails onto the baking tray.

    Place in the oven. Bake for 10 minutes or until the pastry puffs up and turns golden.

    Remove from the oven and allow to cool on a wire cooling rack. Serve on a platter.

Tips

  • Store any uneaten snails in an airtight container. They will lose their crispness if left exposed to air. Eat within 2 days.
  • Alternative spreads that you can use on the pastry include: pesto, tomato paste, olive paste, red pepper paste, and any other savoury paste you like.
  • You can omit the cheese if wished.
