Evaluate your height. Know where you stand in these three categories so you can play to your strengths. The following rank is typical for High School varsity teams:
    • 5'9" and under: Guards
    • 5'10"-6'3": Forwards
    • 6'4" and above: Centers.

Arrive at tryouts. Though this may seem extremely simple, it is the only way you can make the team. Remember; early is on time, on time is late, and late is unacceptable.

Don't goof off. Freshmen are already looked at as amateurs. No matter how much your friends try to talk to you, ignore them and explain after tryouts

Show off your talent. If you're a guard display amazing ball handling. As a forward, make great passes, and as a post get open and score plenty of inside shots

Defense is just as important as offense. Get defensive rebounds, box out, and intercept passes

Stick to what you know and have perfected. Tryouts are not the time to be risky and show off that new street move you've never practiced, especially when trying to make varsity. # Hustle, hustle, hustle. There's a much better chance of making the team if you show excitement of the sport and sprint from place to place.

Don't be stupid. Trying to make a three pointer fully guarded will not impress the coach, even if you make it. It will show that you aren't practical and don't do well under pressure.

Beat yourself up. Not literally speaking, but when you miss a shot or give a bad pass give a visual or audible signal that you're disappointed in yourself to show that you understand the error of your ways. Now if you turnover the ball, don't start stomping your feet and screaming at the top of your lungs.

Finish with perfection. Don't slow down or show your exhaustion. Never put your hands on your knees, as this shows weakness.

Wait for the teams to new chosen. If you don't make it, understand that not everyone is perfect and try again next year.
