How to Make Sweet Melon Salads

This recipe is a step up from the basic fruit salad. It has a bit of heat and the coolness of the fruits as well as the nonstandard fruit salad ingredient, ice cream! This salad can be done two ways and both are explained here.


Melon bowl salad:

  • 1 medium-large cantaloupe melon (rock melon)
  • Chili flakes
  • 1 tin/can fruit cocktail
  • 1 small tin/can coconut milk
  • 1 small bunch seedless black grapes
  • 8 halves fresh strawberries
  • 1 large banana, thickly sliced
  • Lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon runny clear honey
  • 1 tablespoon syrup
  • Sponge fingers

Melon boat salad:

  • Honeydew melon
  • Ice-cream (varied flavours)
  • Toffee sauce
  • Thick slices of banana
  • Sweet apple Skoosh (if you can find it - product may not exist)
  • Double cream
  • Chocolate drops and sprinkles

Method 1
Melon bowl salad

This is great for a dinner party.

    Cut the banana into thick slices. Sprinkle with lemon juice to stop discolouration.

    Cut the melon in half, across the centre. Carefully remove the melon seeds.

    Use a melon baller to make small balls of melon. Place the melon balls into a bowl. Keep one scooped-out melon half for putting the fruit into.

    Add a sprinkle of chili flakes to the melon balls. Pour some juice from the fruit cocktail can and add a small tin of coconut milk to the balls.

    Add a small bunch of seedless black grapes plucked off the bunch.

    Add 8 halved fresh strawberries and the banana slices, the tablespoon of runny clear honey and syrup.

    Mix the fruit well.

    Transfer all of the fruit and fruit juice back in the melon shell from which you removed the flesh.

    Serve with sponge fingers and your favorite topping.

Method 2
Melon boat version

  1. 1
    Cut the the honeydew melon in half. Cut into thick slices, then scoop out the melon till you have the shell of the melon for each slice. This becomes a melon boat.

    Place a melon shell on each plate.

    Cut the melon flesh into chunks and set aside.
  4. 4
    Scoop different varieties of ice-cream into the boat. Then pour a light layer of toffee sauce over the ice-cream.

    Add some chunks of melon and thick slices of banana on top of the ice cream.

    Add dollops of double cream and garnish with chocolate buttons and chocolate sprinkles.

    Serve. This goes well with brandy snaps or cinnamon shortbread.


  • Strawberry sauce is an alternative to toffee sauce.
