How to Make Spice Salt

You can easily make your own spicy salt mix that tastes as good as the commercial varieties but is more budget conscious. To save even more, purchase the spices from bulk or wholesale grocery outlets. Make a few jars of this to share around with friends. Basic Spice Salt

  • 4 oz salt
  • 1 oz black pepper
  • 1 oz thyme
  • 1 oz marjoram
  • 1 oz summer savory
  • 1 oz clove
  • 1 oz allspice
  • 1 oz mace
  • 1/4 oz cayenne pepper
  • 1 oz celery salt

Indian Spicy Salt

  • 2 tbsp table salt
  • 2 tbsp crushed rock salt (available in Southeast Asia)
  • 2 tbsp black salt crushed (available in Southeast Asia)
  • 2 tbsp roasted and powdered cumin seeds (jeera)
  • 2 tbsp red chilli powder
  • 2 tbsp dry mango powder (amchur)

    Mix all of the ingredients together. You can either choose from the ingredients for the basic salt mix, or for the Indian spicy salt mix.

    Sift three times.

    Keep covered in an airtight container or jar for storage. Avoid getting steam in the container when cooking.


  • This spice salt will last for up to a year.
  • Also if this is too spicy a salt for you try different combinations of spice or herbs you may find that a "South of France Salt" suits you better(one part each of Salt, Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and minced lemon zest).
  • Half an ounce of the salt will flavor a stuffing for roast meat and a tablespoonful is nice in many soups and stews.
