How to Make Spice Hot Mats

Spice hot mats make a wonderful gift for Christmas or other occasions. They are mats filled with spice that are meant for placement under hot food containers such as mugs or apple pie fresh out of the oven. The aroma of the spices will waft across the room once the heat warms up the spice hot mat.

  1. 1
Make the spice mixture. Mix together the cinnamon sticks, cloves and rice. Add a sprinkle of allspice. (The amounts are set out below under "Things You'll Need".)
  2. 2
Prepare the fabric. Cut out a 7" x 7" / 18 centimeter (7.1 in) x 18 centimeter (7.1 in) square from the thick scrap fabric and the same from the thin scrap fabric. Make sure to choose matching pieces!
  3. 3
Sew the square pieces together. Sew on the wrong side (inside out) on three of the edges.
  4. 4
Divide the square into three equal lengths. Sew up the two lengths to the open edge, to create three separate slots in the fabric.
  5. 5
Fill each of the slots with the rice and spice mixture.
  6. 6
    Sew the opening closed

Finish off with any decorative elements you consider appropriate. The spice mat in the image shows a small pocket sewn onto the front of the spice mat for inserting a tea bag into (ideal for a gift or sales item). This can be added easily using a print piece of fabric, cut around with pinking shears.
  8. 8
Use. Either wrap for giving as a gift, or use yourself. Place under hot dishes, pots, or mugs when you would like the aroma to fill the air.

  • The hot mats should be stored in sealable plastic bags to retain their scent.
