How to Make Slimy Spaghetti Worms

Kids love feeling the sliminess of spaghetti between their fingers. Why not make them spaghetti worms? They are colorful, easy to make, and super slimy! Children will enjoy this fun activity and great fun anytime!

Part 1
Making the Spaghetti Worms

    Boil the spaghetti. Boil about one medium sized packet. Check your package directions to see how long to cook it.

    Drain your spaghetti. Shake it off well to have no excess water.

    Squirt two or three tablespoons of vegetable oil into the spaghetti. Mix using your hands or a spoon.

    Add fifteen drops of red food coloring. Mix until the vibrant color of the 'worms' appear.

    Pour the spaghetti in a bucket. Place it out where you don't mind messes (examples could be a garage, an old room, the backyard, etc).
    • If you are doing this activity in a place were you do mind messes, spread an old tablecloth or blanket on the floor. This will prevent an oily colorful mess on your carpet or floor.

Part 2
Playing it Safe and Fun

    Bring several tools. Bowls, funnels, a pair of tongs, spoons, and/or measuring cups are good choices of tools to play with the spaghetti.

    Wear gloves if needed. If you and/or your kids want to avoid getting food coloring stains on your hands, wear plastic gloves before starting to play.
    • Do note that if you do wear gloves, you won't be able to feel the 'sliminess' between your fingers.

    Start playing! Feel that spaghetti between your fingers. Use some of your tools to make this activity more fun than ever!

    Clean up. After all the enjoyment, it's time to clean up. Place the spaghetti in a container for another play date. If you were wearing gloves, remove them and wash your hands. If you didn't wear gloves, wash your hands thoroughly with warm water and soap.
    • This pasta can last for about a month, as long as you pour oil and fresh food coloring when it's time to play again.

Tips

  • You don't have to use red food coloring if you don't want to. Use any color you want or have on hand.
  • This is a perfect edible activity. You won't have to worry if you have children still shoving items in their mouth.
  • To make rainbow 'worms', separate the spaghetti and add different drops of food coloring into each.
  • This activity is best when done outside.
  • If you don't have oil or don't want to use any, spray water instead.
  • If your child is that one who eats everything they see, use melted butter instead of oil. It's fun to play and tasty too!

Warnings

  • Do not give the spaghetti to your child until it has cooled down.
