How to Make Sausage and Mash

Two very English main ingredients combine exquisitely in this quintessential English dish (sometimes called "bangers and mash").

Ingredients

  • 6 sausages
  • 1.1 pounds (0.5 kg) potatoes
  • 0.2 pint (0.125 liter) milk
  • 1 ounce (25 grams) butter
  • Salt and pepper

Steps

    Pre-heat your oven to 200 °C (392 °F).

    Peel and slice the potatoes. Place them in a saucepan filled about half full with boiling water. Cook them on a low heat for about 15 to 20 minutes. Cover the saucepan with a lid to save energy since you'll be keeping the heat in.

    Place the sausages on a baking tray and place it in the oven for 15 minutes. Take the tray out about halfway through, pierce the sausages with a sharp knife, and turn them over. Put them back in the oven for the remaining time.

    Tell if the potatoes are ready for mashing by sticking a fork in them and getting a nice, mushy, and soft result.

    Drain the water from the potatoes and mash the potatoes into a creamy texture.

    Add a large chunk of butter and pinches of salt & pepper to the potatoes. Continue mashing.

    Pour the milk into the potato mixture and mash some more until the consistency and taste is right for you.

    Serve a generous scoop of mashed potatoes and a few sausages per plate.
