How to Make Salata Balati

Salata Balati (also spelled as Salada Baladi) is a classical North African & Middle Eastern salad served with many meals as a stock-standard side dish. Rich in flavour, this salad is perfect for any Middle Eastern themed dinner, snack or with Ful Medames for breakfast.


  • 2 large ripe tomatoes, cut into dice.
  • 1 bunch of flat leaf or Italian parsley chopped (or about 1 loose cup of fresh leaves chopped).
  • 1 Lebanese cucumber, diced.
  • 1 carrot, peeled and grated or cut into small strips.
  • 1 large green capsicum / bell pepper, de-seeded and diced.
  • 1 red onion, peeled and diced (some recipes may omit onion and use radish instead for the peppery bite)
  • Juice of 2 medium limes or lemons.
  • 1/4 cup of olive oil.
  • Cumin powder (approx 1 teaspoon), chilli powder, salt and pepper - to taste.

    Prepare your Salad. Mix vegetables and parsley in a large bowl until combined. Ideally all vegetable dice should be about the same size, but its not essential.
    • In traditional styles, this salad was often served with flat bread as a scoop, similar to a salsa, so the salad should not be too coarse, not too fine.

    Prepare the dressing. Mix the lemon or lime juice in a bowl with the oil, add the spices and stir well, testing the dressing for taste. You may need to adjust the spices to be a good balance of subtle spice, saltiness and sourness.
    • If desired, you may add a pinch or two of sugar if the lemon or lime juice is too strong.

    Dress the salad & serve. Pour the dressing over the salad and stir gently to combine. Serve on a large decorative plate or bowl and garnish with flat breads, toasted sesame seeds, pickled vegetables and olives if desired.
