How to Make Rose Petal Sandwiches

Rose petals aren't just for looking pretty on rose bushes or strewing before the bride's pathway. They're also highly nutritious vitamin C sources that look absolutely gorgeous served up in a dainty tea sandwich. They're perfect for a genteel afternoon tea or for a party where everything needs to be magical.

  • Inner petals of recently opened roses–these are the tenderest petals and therefore ideal; choose a variety of colours to suit the occasion
  • White sandwich bread, good quality (you could use brown bread but the high colour contrast is part of the delight in these sandwiches)
  • Butter (preferably rose butter if you can make it)

Butter slices of sandwich bread. Do as many as you think you'll need for guests.
    • It's up to you whether or not you cut off the crust. Judge it by how nice the crust looks on the bread you're using.

Add petals to each sandwich. There is a bit of a trick to this, in that you need to let the petals slightly overlap the edges of the sandwiches in order for them to be seen by guests.
    • It's also a good idea to vary the colours being added if you have a variety of colours. The colour theme is up to you though.

Cut the sandwiches into quarters. The petals should show from every edge of the sandwich.

Arrange the rose petal sandwich quarters on a pretty tray or plate for serving.
    • Placing doilies under the sandwiches can be an effective arrangement decoration.

  • Be sure that the roses have not been sprayed with anything unsuitable for human consumption. If in doubt, don't use the petals.
  • If you don't have rose butter or don't want to use butter, try cream cheese instead.

  • Don't use any petals that you're not sure of the origins of. If the petals have been sprayed with anything toxic for human consumption, do not use them.
