How to Make Pipe Cleaner Candy Canes

Pipe cleaner candy canes are easy to make for young and old alike. They're a very effective tree or house decoration for the holiday season and can be added to gifts in place of a bow.

Method 1
Making a pipe cleaner candy cane

    Assemble the items needed for the project. These are listed below under Things You'll Need.

    Align one red and one white pipe cleaner side by side.

    Twist the red and one white pipe cleaners together. Make sure to twist evenly.

    When the twisting is completed, there should be no leftover color pipe cleaner. If there is, trim it off to neaten the end and make it even.

    Bend the twisted colors into a candy cane shape. The candy cane is now ready for use or you can decorate further:
    • Tie a small bow around the middle of each candy cane you make; or

    • Bundle 3 candy canes together and tie a bow around the middle of the sticks to keep them bundled together.

    Hang or prop up the pipe cleaner candy canes wherever they look best.

Method 2
Crystallizing the pipe cleaner candy cane

Add crystals to the candy cane, to make it sparkle and appear as if it has just come from the North Pole.

    Tie the candy cane to a thread.

    Tie the thread to a craft stick.

    Fill a glass jar with hot water and borax. Fill it to about three quarters of the jar.

    Hang the craft stick horizontally over the jar.

    Let the candy cane soak in the solution for a few days.

    Check for crystal growth. When it looks ready, take it out and let the candy cane dry for a few hours.

    Finished. It's now ready to put on display.

Method 3
Bundle of candy canes

    Make about six to ten candy canes. Follow the instructions given above.

    Select a suitable pretty ribbon in seasonal colors.

    Place the various candy canes together in a bunch.

    Tie the ribbon in a knot around the middle of the bunch to hold it tightly. Tie the ribbon into a bow shape.

Tips

  • Use different colored pipe cleaners to give the candy canes a more personal twist.
  • Silver glitter can be used in place of borax.

  • Pipe cleaner candy canes
    • 12mm pipe cleaners or chenille sticks (as many as you wish to make the candy canes)
    • Scissors
    • Ribbon for bow
  • Crystallized candy canes
    • 4.5 centimeters (1.77 inches) thread
    • Craft stick
    • Glass jar
    • Hot water
    • Borax
    • Thin ribbon
    • Differently colored pipe cleaners
