Making your own cat treats also gives your cat a wider range of flavor choices, since you can use virtually any cat-safe ingredient—like tuna, cheese, or chicken—to create a deliciously crunchy snack for your feline friend.

Method 1
Tuna Bites

    1
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (177 degrees Celsius). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or nonstick aluminum foil.
  2. Image titled Make Organic Cat Treats Step 2
    2
Combine the tuna with the water. If you want to give your cats a treat with a stronger tuna flavor, you can use some or all of the water that you drained from your can of tuna. Otherwise, filtered tap water should suffice.

    3
Add the organic cornmeal and organic flour to the moistened tuna. Use your hands to blend the cornmeal and flour with the tuna until a moldable dough forms. Knead this dough into a ball.
  4. Image titled Make Organic Cat Treats Step 4
    4
Place the ball of dough onto a floured counter. Use a rolling pin to flatten the dough to a thickness of 1/4 inch (0.64 centimeter).
  5. Image titled Make Organic Cat Treats Step 5
    5
Use a knife to cut the dough into strips. Each strip should be roughly 1 inch (2.5 centimeters) wide.
  6. Image titled Make Organic Cat Treats Step 6
    6
Cut each strip into smaller pieces. Each piece should be as close to a perfect square as possible, with a width and height of 1 inch (2.5 centimeters) each.

    7
Arrange the pieces on your prepared baking sheet. The pieces should not be touching, but they do not need a lot of space to expand.

Bake the treats for 20 minutes. Allow them to cool to room temperature before giving them to your cat, and store any extra treats in an airtight bag or container.

Method 2
Cheese Treats

    1
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (177 degrees Celsius). Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil or parchment paper.
  2. Image titled Make Organic Cat Treats Step 10
    2
Combine the cheddar and Parmesan cheeses in a large bowl. Mix the two cheeses by hand until evenly distributed.
  3. Image titled Make Organic Cat Treats Step 11
    3
Add the yogurt to the cheeses. Use your hands or a spoon to mix the yogurt into the cheese combination. The mix should be thoroughly combined with the cheeses look sticky and coated.
  4. Image titled Make Organic Cat Treats Step 12
    4
Gradually add in the flour and cornmeal. Add 1/4 cup (56.7 grams) of the flour and cornmeal to the cheese mix at a time, stirring it in with a spoon or mixing it in with your hands after each addition. Continue mixing the flour and cornmeal in until a thoroughly combined dough starts to form.

    5
Pour a little water into the dough. If the dough is too dry or stiff to work with, you can add a little amount of water to it until it becomes pliable.

    6
Knead the dough into a ball inside the bowl. The dough should hold together without too much difficulty.
  7. Image titled Make Organic Cat Treats Step 15
    7
Sprinkle a little flour onto the counter and set your dough down. Use a rolling pin to flatten the dough to 1/4-inch (0.64-centimeter) thickness.

    8
Cut 1-inch (2 1/2-centimeter) pieces out of the dough. Use a knife to cut rows with a width of 1 inch (2 1/2 centimeters). Cut these rows into pieces with a height of 1 inch (2 1/2 centimeters) as well.

In a large bowl, combine the organic flour, powdered milk, and cooked organic chicken. Use your hands to mix them together until the shredded chicken is thoroughly coated in the flour and powdered milk.

    3
Add the wet ingredients to the bowl. Use your hands or a spoon to mix in the chicken broth, beaten egg, and melted margarine. Semi-sticky but moldable dough should form.
    • You can also use water instead of chicken broth or vegetable oil instead of melted margarine.
  4. Image titled Make Organic Cat Treats Step 22
    4
Pinch off small balls of dough. Roll the dough into dime-size balls and line the balls on your prepared baking sheet.
  5. Image titled Make Organic Cat Treats Step 23
    5
Flatten the balls into discs. Use your thumb or the back of a spoon.
    • If the dough starts sticking to your hands or to the spoon, you can spray a little nonstick cooking spray onto the balls of dough before pressing them.

    6
Bake the treats for 10 minutes. Remove them from the oven and flip each treat over to the other side.

    7
Return the treats to the oven and bake for another 10 minutes. Take them out of the oven once they turn a golden brown on top.

Allow the treats to cool to room temperature before giving any to your cat. Store the extra treats in an airtight container.

Tips

  • For an extra special treat, you can try mixing a little organic catnip into the dough. Anywhere from 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon (4.8 to 14.3 grams) of catnip should be enough per batch.

Warnings

  • Know what foods are toxic to cats. Before following a recipe for homemade cat treats, do your research and make sure that none of the ingredients in the recipe are potentially hazardous.
  • Treat your cat in moderation. Even the best homemade, organic cat treats are still not nutritionally balanced enough to meet all of your cat's dietary needs. Treats should make up no more than 10% of your cat's overall diet.
