How to Make Lucia Bread

Ingredients

Dough

  • Dry yeast (2 1/4-ounces Packages)
  • Milk (1½ Cups)
  • Sugar (1/4 Cup)
  • Salt (1 Tsp)
  • Butter (5-6 Tbsp)
  • Eggs (2-3)
  • Orange juice (1/4 Cup)
  • Orange rind (1 Tbsp)
  • Flour (6 Cups)

Garnish

  • Confectioners sugar (2½ Cups)
  • Orange juice (3 Tbsp)
  • Raisins (optional)
  • Candles (optional)

Part 1
Making the Bread

    Heat the milk up in a saucepan, and add ½ cup of the heated milk to a large bowl.

    Add the Dry Yeast and 1 Tbsp of the sugar. Let set for 5 minutes while you melt the butter in the milk that is still in the saucepan.

    Add butter or milk to the dry yeast. Whisk in eggs, orange juice and rind, sugar and salt.

    Add all this to the flour (add just a little at a time), until the dough can be kneaded. Knead for 4-8 minutes.

    Coat the dough with a thin layer of oil and transfer to a bowl, to let it rise (this takes about 1 ½ hours, and the dough should be twice its size now).

    Divide the dough into 3 similar sized parts. Roll each part out to an about 30-inch roll, and braid them.

    Add to greased baking sheet and stick the ends together to make a circle. Let the dough rise again (this takes about 40 minutes).

    Heat the oven to about 374°F (190°C). Bake for 20-30 minutes, or until the bread is golden.

    Let the bread cool.

Garnishing the Bread

    Stir confectioners sugar and orange juice in a bowl until smooth texture is reached.

    Pour the mixture on the bread and garnish with raisins and candles.

Tips

  • The raisins can be substituted with dried cranberries.
  • To make the tradition right, there should be seven candles on the bread.
