Do you use lip balm a lot? If so, making your own is a great way to save money. Create a customized lip balm with your favorite ingredients and scents, then use it up yourself or pour it into containers to give away to friends. This article instructs for making three types of lip balm: quick balm, lemon lime balm, and healing balm.

Method 1
Quick Lip Balm

    1
Add some petroleum jelly to a microwaveable bowl. Use as much or as little as you want. If you use the entire tub of petroleum jelly, you can put your lip balm back in the container for storage.
  2. Image titled Make Lip Balm Step 2
    2
Heat it up. You can heat up your petroleum jelly in the microwave or in a heatproof bowl over simmering water.

Add some color. Tint the petroleum jelly by cutting a small piece of your favorite lipstick, scraping out some eye shadow, or scraping out some blush and mixing it in. Use a spoon to stir it thoroughly. Heat back up to make it easier to stir.

Let the mixture cool. Put the balm in a container and use it as needed.

Method 2
Lemon Lime Lip Balm

    1
Mix the balm ingredients. Lip balm is made from a combination of oils and solids that blend to create a mixture that is spreadable, but not liquefied. The oils make the balm soft and moisturizing, the beeswax stiffens it, and the essential oils add scent. Mix the following ingredients together in a bowl:
    • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
    • 2 tablespoons olive oil
    • 2 tablespoon chopped beeswax
    • 5 drops lemon essential oil and 5 drops lime essential oil (substitute these for other essential oils if you wish)
  2. Image titled Make Lip Balm Step 7
    2
Pour the mixture into a double boiler. The lip balm mixture needs to melt slowly over low heat.
    • If you don't have a double boiler, you can make one with two pots. Find a large pot and a smaller pot that fits inside it. Fill the larger pot with a few inches of water, then place the smaller pot inside. Pour the lip balm mixture into the small pot, taking care not to get any water in the pot.
    • You may want to use a pot reserved especially for making lip balm and other body products, since beeswax is difficult to remove from cookware.

    3
Melt the ingredients over medium-high heat. Turn on the burner under the double boiler to heat the water and melt the ingredients. Stir them frequently so everything is evenly incorporated.

    4
Add color. Add a chunk of your favorite lipstick, blush, or eye shadow color if you wish. Mix it in with a spoon.

Pour the mixture into containers. If you are saving it for yourself, pour it into a large container. If you are giving it away to friends, divide it into smaller containers.
    • You may want to place newspapers under the containers so your work area will be easier to clean up.
    • Empty lip balm tubes and tins can be purchased from craft supply stores.

Allow the mixture to cool completely. Use the balm and decide how you like the texture. If you want a firmer balm next time, use more beeswax. If you like it softer, use more oil.

Method 3
Healing Lip Balm

Mix the balm ingredients. Healing balm is made with vitamin E and peppermint to soothe your lips and sinuses when you have a cold. Mix the following ingredients together in a bowl:
    • 1 tablespoon Shea butter
    • 2 tablespoon sweet almond oil
    • 1 tablespoon chopped beeswax
    • 5 drops vitamin E oil
    • 5 drops peppermint oil

Pour the mixture into a double boiler. Melt it slowly over medium heat, using a spoon to stir it frequently to make sure the ingredients become incorporated and smooth.

Pour the mixture into containers. Empty mint tins make the perfect container for healing lip balm. Pour it carefully into containers and allow it to cool completely.

Use the balm when your lips are chapped. When you get sick, spread it liberally on your lips. A dab just under your nose helps heal the area, and the peppermint essential oil helps to open your sinuses.

Tips

  • If you do not have a microwave, you can heat a pan of water with petroleum jelly in a bowl (on top of the pan).
  • Check craft stores and online suppliers for essential oils, butters, waxes, and lip balm containers.
  • If you want to make the quick balm firm, use some melted beeswax instead of petroleum jelly.
  • Experiment with your favorite oils. As long as the basic ratio stays the same, you can swap out one oil or butter for another without changing the texture of the lip balm.
  • Petroleum jelly will only mix with other oil soluble substances. Don't be surprised when some of your non-oil based substances form a separate layer.
  • Keep in a fridge when you're not going to use it.

Warnings

  • If you add color from a makeup product, make sure it's safe for use on lips. Don't add nail polish or another product that contains chemicals that shouldn't be ingested.
