How to Make Glowing Party Tables

Make a dramatic statement at your next event or holiday party by lighting up your tables on the inside. This effect doesn’t require a lighting specialist or any trick. Any covered table and lights will do the trick to add a romantic feeling to any party.

Steps

Choose enough tables to make your event complete. Even if you are only going to use one table, make sure the table is functional and will draw your guests toward it.

Identify areas in the room or party area that are flat. Because you will be housing lighting underneath the table, it’s imperative you select a completely flat surface for table placement.

Select table linens that won’t reveal the lanterns but will enhance the glowing effect. Brightly colored taffeta material or a few sheer linens will add to the romance.
    • Make sure table linens reach the ground. A tablecloth that is too short will reveal your trick so you want to make sure you have enough excess fabric that sits nicely on the ground.

    • Avoid a wool or non-transparent fabric or else your effect will be blown and the lighting won’t show through.

Arrange your tables with cloths around your event. Before placing lighting, have your table scheme worked out in terms of placement.

Add one or two (or even three, depending upon your table size) battery operated camping lanterns underneath each table.
    • Create height and interest with lighting by placing a brick or block underneath the table and setting one of the lanterns on top. Staggered lighting will allow lights to shine in different areas around the table.

Tips

  • Avoid creating a tripping hazard by securing the table linens underneath the table. Use small weights or even rocks to keep linens in place (place stones or weights underneath the linens so they are not apparent to guests).
  • Consider using colored lights instead of white if you plan to use a white tablecloth and want to compliment your event’s color.

Things You’ll Need

  • Tables
  • Flowing thin fabric tablecloth, preferably one that reaches the ground
  • Battery operated lanterns
  • Blocks or bricks
