Create gift bags that your party guests can take home to enjoy after the baby shower. The bags are a great way to thank your guests for their participation and to help them commemorate the event.

Method 1
Decide How to Fill the Gift Bags

    1
Create a coffee, tea or hot cocoa gift bag. Place a mug inside the gift bags and place a small bag of coffee, a small box of tea or some pouches of hot cocoa inside the mug.
  2. Image titled Make Gift Bags for Baby Showers Step 2
    2
Place stationery in your gift bag. Some ideas include notepads, pens, sticky notes, stationery boxes and paperweights.
  3. Image titled Make Gift Bags for Baby Showers Step 3
    3
Include chocolate in your gift bag. Include a variety of chocolates including bars, lollipops and wrapped truffles.
  4. Image titled Make Gift Bags for Baby Showers Step 4

Place books inside your bag. Purchase a personalized selection for each guest (if you’re having a small shower) or choose the same books for each guest. You can use a variety of book sizes, such as large inspirational quote books mixed with 1 or 2 smaller gift books. Insert a bookmark.
  5. Image titled Make Gift Bags for Baby Showers Step 5
    5
Create a bath kit. Include packets of shampoo and conditioner, scented soap, bubble bath, some lotion and a shower cap.
  6. Image titled Make Gift Bags for Baby Showers Step 6
    6
Assemble a pedicure basket. Nail polish, moisturizing lotion, a foot file, a nail file and a fun magazine will complete the experience.
  7. Image titled Make Gift Bags for Baby Showers Step 7
    7
Include a mix. Place a bag of layered cookie mix, cake mix, pancake mix or soup mix plus a recipe inside the gift bag.
  8. Image titled Make Gift Bags for Baby Showers Step 8
    8
Create a gift bag including liquor. Add some wine and some decorative wine glasses. Or you can make a margarita gift bag that includes sour mix, a bottle of good tequila, salt or sugar for the rim and 2 margarita glasses.

Method 2
Make Gift Bags Using Fabric

  1. Image titled Make Gift Bags for Baby Showers Step 9
    1
Determine how large your gift bags need to be based on what you are putting inside. Then, add an inch to all sides to provide room for a seam.
    • Determine the width of the bag.
    • Decide on the height of your bag. Double the height to determine the length of your fabric. For example, a 20” by 10” bag will require a piece of fabric that is 40” long and 10” wide.
    • Add 1” to all sides. A piece of fabric 40” by 10” becomes a piece that is 42” by 12”. This provides enough room for the seams.
  2. Image titled Make Gift Bags for Baby Showers Step 10
    2
Mark the measurements on your fabric with a pencil and cut the fabric with sharp scissors. The fabric should be facing right side up on your work surface.
  3. Image titled Make Gift Bags for Baby Showers Step 11
    3
Fold the fabric in half. Bring the bottom edge of the fabric up to meet the top edge. This will put the inside of the fabric on top.
  4. Image titled Make Gift Bags for Baby Showers Step 12
    4
Pin the edges of the fabric about 1” into the fabric on 3 sides. Leave the top of the fabric unpinned.
  5. Image titled Make Gift Bags for Baby Showers Step 13
    5
Stitch each of the 3 sides that you have pinned together.
  6. Image titled Make Gift Bags for Baby Showers Step 14
    6
Fold the top raw edges of the fabric down. Hem the folded down edges.
  7. Image titled Make Gift Bags for Baby Showers Step 15
    7
    Turn the bag inside out.
  8. Image titled Make Gift Bags for Baby Showers Step 16
    8
Cut a length of matching ribbon about 12” long.
  9. Image titled Make Gift Bags for Baby Showers Step 17
    9
Stitch the midpoint of the ribbon to the outside of the bag. Locate the stitch about 4” down from the opening.
  10. Image titled Make Gift Bags for Baby Showers Step 18
    10
Place the gift materials inside the bag.
  11. Image titled Make Gift Bags for Baby Showers Step 19
    11
Tie the ribbon around the top hem of the fabric bag. Fluff the top to make it look more appealing.

Method 3
Make Gift Bags with Paper

You can use a double layer of newspaper or wrapping paper to make these gifts. Alternatively, to make strong bags, use wallpaper.

  1. Image titled Make Gift Bags for Baby Showers Step 20
    1
Determine the width, height and depth of your bag based on the gifts that you have chosen.
  2. Image titled Make Gift Bags for Baby Showers Step 21
    2
Lay 2 piece of paper on top of each other. Measure your paper according to the following formulas:
    • Height = Height of gift bag + 2” + 1.25”
    • Width = Width of bag + depth of bag + width+ depth + 0.5”
    • If you see a fold in the paper, try to align the fold with one of the natural creases of the paper. If you don’t mind a fold in your bag, then you don’t have to worry about placement.
  3. Image titled Make Gift Bags for Baby Showers Step 22
    3
    Cut out the paper.
  4. Image titled Make Gift Bags for Baby Showers Step 23
    4
Place the side of the paper that should be on the exterior of the bag down on your work surface. The wrong side should be facing you.
  5. Image titled Make Gift Bags for Baby Showers Step 24
    5
    Fold the paper as follows:
    • Measure the width from the left edge and fold.
    • Measure the depth from the fold that you just made and fold.
    • Measure the width again and fold.
    • Measure the depth again and fold. You are creating the 4 sides of the bag. If you’ve done this correctly, you will have 0.5” left over for the seam of the bag.
  6. Image titled Make Gift Bags for Baby Showers Step 25
    6
Fold the top of the paper down 1.25” along the width of the rectangle.
  7. Image titled Make Gift Bags for Baby Showers Step 26
    7
Fold the bottom of the paper up 2” along the width of the rectangle.
  8. Image titled Make Gift Bags for Baby Showers Step 27
    8
Cut a piece of chipboard or cardstock so that the width of the piece equals the width of your bag. Make the piece 1” tall. You will place this under the rim of the bag to reinforce the paper.
  9. Image titled Make Gift Bags for Baby Showers Step 28
    9
Glue the chipboard or cardstock to the width pieces of your rectangle. The top of the chipboard or cardstock should meet the top crease in the paper where you folded the top down.
  10. Image titled Make Gift Bags for Baby Showers Step 29
    10
Glue the top flap down over the cardboard. Since the bag is 2-ply, you will have to glue each layer of paper separately.
  11. Image titled Make Gift Bags for Baby Showers Step 30
    11
Glue the left end of the paper to the 0.5” seam on the right of the paper. Make sure that the cut edge of the panel aligns with the folded edge of the flap.
  12. Image titled Make Gift Bags for Baby Showers Step 31
    12
Position the bag so that the 2” flap is at the top.
    • Fold the short sides inward and crease them.
    • Bring the top and bottom triangles together. This is exactly the way that you fold the sides when you are wrapping a gift.
    • Place glue around the diagonal sides of the triangles and glue the pieces together.
  13. Image titled Make Gift Bags for Baby Showers Step 32
    13
Cut out a small piece of cardboard. The height should match the depth of the gift bag, and its width should match the width of the gift bag. Then, trim 0.25” from each side of the cardboard.
  14. Image titled Make Gift Bags for Baby Showers Step 33
    14
Push the cardboard into the bottom of the bag. This will hide the bottom seams and reinforce the bag.
  15. Image titled Make Gift Bags for Baby Showers Step 34
    15
Punch holes through the top rim of each side of the bag. These holes will house the handles of the bag.
  16. Image titled Make Gift Bags for Baby Showers Step 35
    16
    Add eyelets to the holes.
  17. Image titled Make Gift Bags for Baby Showers Step 36
    17
Cut 2 matching lengths of cord to form the handles. You want the cord to be the appropriate length for grabbing the bag plus 2” on each end for the knots.
  18. Image titled Make Gift Bags for Baby Showers Step 37
    18
Thread each end of the cord through the eyelets.
  19. Image titled Make Gift Bags for Baby Showers Step 38
    19
Tie knots in the cords behind the eyelets so that the cord is held in place.
  20. Image titled Make Gift Bags for Baby Showers Step 39
    20
Place the gift materials in the bag.
  21. Image titled Make Gift Bags for Baby Showers Step 40
    21
Stuff a few pieces of tissue paper over the gift materials to complete the bag.
