How to Make Five Spice Powder

This is a traditional Chinese blend of five ground spices, with a strong flavour of star anise. Excellent using in for Chinese dishes and is known as the "Chinese garam masala".[1]


  • 1 ½ tablespoons star anise
  • 3 teaspoons ground fennel
  • 3 teaspoons ground cassia
  • 1 teaspoon ground Sichuan pepper
  • ½ teaspoon ground cloves

    Combine the five ground spices in a bowl.

    Mix well.

    Pour into an airtight container. The mixture will stay fresh for 1 - 3 months. Keep in the fridge for extended freshness.


  • If possible, the best ingredients are freshly ground. Use a spice blender or a mortar and pestle to grind the spices at home.
