How to Make Dandelion Coffee from Scratch

Dandelion coffee can be purchased ready ground and made into a coffee at home. You can go one step further and make your own dandelion coffee from scratch following these instructions.

Steps

    Dig up the roots of several dandelion plants. The plants must be at least two years old. Dig the plants up during autumn, when they have good food storage in the roots.

    Cut off the crowns.

    Wash the soil off the roots.

    Dry the roots gently with paper towel or a cloth towel. Press gently and dab them dry.

    Lay the roots on a baking tray lined with baking paper. Keep them separated from one another. Place in an oven on low heat ( 275ºF/135ºC) to dry out completely.

    Roast until it turns a light brown colour.

    Grind in the same manner as coffee. Store excess amounts in an airtight container in the fridge or a very cool place.

Tips

  • The roots can be stored in an airtight container after they have been dried in the oven. They will keep this way for several months, provided they are kept dry. Remove from storage to roast and grind when needed.
