How to Make Bumble Bees

Bumble bees are an old fashioned small cake filled with dried fruit and nuts. Perhaps they looked like bumble bees to the cooks of yore, for the name has stuck!


  • 1 cup coconut
  • 1 cup sultanas
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 cup dates
  • 1 cup nuts
  • ¼ cup ginger
  • ½ tin condensed milk
  • Extra coconut
  • Cherries (glacé) for decoration

    Chop up the dates, nuts, raisins and ginger into small pieces. Put into a mixing bowl.

    Add the sultanas and coconut. Pour in the condensed milk and mix all together well.

    Preheat the oven to 180ºC/350ºF.

    Once mixed, mould each "bumble bee shape" using a teaspoon to create a long, ball-like shape that could pass for a bee's body. Roll in the coconut. Place a piece of cherry on top.

    Place each bumble bee on a tray lined with baking paper.

    Place in the oven and bake for 15-20 minutes.

    Remove from the oven and allow to cool on a wire cooling rack.


  • Keep in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
