How to Make Aromatherapy Candles

Aromatherapy candles can be used to treat a variety of ailments. Aromatherapy helps people deal with some health problems, such as alleviating high stress levels, reducing tension and elevating mood. Not only do they have a pleasant aroma, but they can also supply you with the right kind of ambient lighting. With the right supplies, you can make aromatherapy candles in different scents, different designs and different textures.

    Place 10 regular sized unscented candles into an old pot. Put the pot onto the stove. Turn the burner on medium heat.

    Give the candles time to melt. Carefully watch the candles turn to heated wax. Once the candles have melted, use a pair of long tweezers to remove the wicks from the candles that have melted. Place these in the garbage can.

    Use potholders to remove the pot from the stove. Place the pot on another burner that is turned off.

    Pour 10 to 12 drops of the essential oil of your choice into the hot wax. Stir the mixture of melted wax and essential oil with an old wooden spoon. This will help to disperse the scented oil evenly throughout the melted wax.

    Add dye to the melted wax when you want to change the color of the candle. However, it is much easier and less messy to melt down candles without changing their color and adding dye to the melted wax.

    Twirl the wick around a pen or pencil and allow the pen to balance on the opening of the jar. Allow the wick to hang freely inside the jar.

    Pour the melted wax into 2 medium sized jars being careful not to burn yourself. Make sure you pour an equal amount of hot wax into each jar.

    Unravel the pencil or pen with the wick on the end of it. Cut the excess wick from the pencil.

    Use potholders to pick up the jars and set the jars to the side. Make sure to place them somewhere safe, where they will not be knocked over.

    Give the wax time to mold and form into a candle. Once it has set, light the candle and enjoy your homemade aromatherapy candle.

    Try using different containers to make candles in. Different shaped containers, make different shaped candles. You can also buy different candle molds at craft stores to give your candle collection more variety.


  • To make your own unique colors, try adding a few different colors of melted wax into the mix. Do this when you are melting down the candles to make the aromatherapy candles.
  • Using good molds you could make hearts flowers etc. you could also use a toothpick to write notes like 'love' or 'best'.
  • Add variations of fresh herbs and essential oils to give your homemade aromatherapy candles added texture, scent and detail.
  • You can also create your own candle design. Instead of making 1 color, try adding layers of different colors of melted wax to make your own personalized candle.
  • You can also add more than 1 essential oil into the mix to give each candle its own exclusive scent.


  • Make sure you always wear potholders. When the hot wax touches your skin, it can cause serious burns. It will also be difficult to get the hot wax off your hand. Always wear protection on your hands.
