How to Make Aniseed Cake

Aniseed, also known as anise, is a spice which tastes similar to liquorice or fennel. It makes a fairly interesting addition to a cake.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 60g/2oz butter
  • Pinch salt
  • 2 tbsp honey or syrup
  • 1 cup milk (dairy, soy, rice, etc.)
  • 2 cups self-raising/self-rising flour (use non-gluten option if preferred)
  • 9-10 drops aniseed oil, culinary variety

Steps

    Preheat the oven to 150ºC/300ºF. Line or grease the cake pan.

    Melt the butter in the saucepan over low heat. Add the sugar and stir to melt.

    Pour the sugar and butter mixture into the mixing bowl. Add the sugar and salt and mix through.

    Stir in the aniseed oil drops. Add the honey or syrup.

    Sift in the flour. Mix well.

    Pour the cake batter into the cake pan. Use the spatula to remove any mixture left stuck to the bowl.

    Place in the oven. Bake for one hour or until a skewer inserted into the cake comes out clean.

    Remove from the oven. Leave to cool on a wire baking rack for 5 minutes, then remove from the pan and leave to cool on the rack out of the pan.

Tips

  • Flour can be used in place of parchment paper or greasing the pan.
