How to Make and Embroider Reusable Shopping Bags

Three Parts:Make the BagEmbroider the LeavesEmbroider the Flowers

Instead of using plastic bags, make your own reusable shopping bags. Not only are they better quality than plastic bags, you can personalize them by adding a little embroidery.

This article shows how to add a simple leaves-and-flowers motif, but you can embroider any design you like to decorate your bag.

Part 1
Make the Bag

The Body of the Bag

  1. 1
Choose your favorite fabric. Cut two pieces of fabric to the size slightly larger than you want your bag to be.
  2. 2
Place the pieces of fabric together. The right sides should be facing each other.
  3. 3
Sew the two pieces together along three sides. Leave the top of the bag unsewn.
  4. 4
Turn the top edge over and sew the edge down. Make sure you don't sew the two sides of your bag together.

The Handles

  1. 1
Cut two long strips of fabric for the handles. These strips should be a little more than twice as long and twice as wide as you would like your handles to be.
  2. 2
Fold one strip in half, lengthwise with the right sides facing each other.
  3. 3
Sew along the edge to create a tube.
  4. 4
Use a knitting needle (or something similar) to turn your tube right side out.
  5. 5
Repeat the above steps to create the other handle.

Finish the Bag

  1. 1
Attach the handles to the (still inside out) bag body. Attach the handles with pins first to make sure they are where you want them to be.
  2. 2
    Stitch the handles in place.
  3. 3
Turn the bag right side out.

Part 2
Embroider the Leaves

  1. 1
Assemble the materials you will need. These are shown in the photo above

  2. 2
Draw the leaves. Cut out a leaf and flower as the picture shows.
    • Place the leaf on the bag; draw the leaf shape on the fabric one by one.
  3. 3
Embroider the leaves. Embroider the leaf with different colored threads along the edges of the leaves.

  4. 4
Embroider the diagonal for each leaf.

  1. 1
Place the paper flower on the gap between two leaves
