Pick a specific room to hold your Safe Room (SR) This should be a room that is underground, and fairly large, such as a Basement. Make sure it is large enough to accommodate your family comfortably.

Consider specific things for this room. Sound-proofing, fire-proofing, an emergency exit (if it is underground, the door may be blocked and you may need another exit) and bomb proofing for the room. Sound-proofing the SR is useful if you are afraid of burglars or bombing. Fire-proofing is useful if you want to make sure a fire will not wipe out the entire house. Bomb proofing is for bombs and bullets.

Stock your SR with supplies. Non perishable food and liquids such as water and squash should be stocked up for two weeks, with enough for each person in your house plus 1. Tools should be put in this room too. See the supplies list for details of what should go in. A sink with running water and at least one electric lamp connected to electricity are also a good addition.

Make this room comfortable! Make sure there is a bed for everyone in the family, a comfortable place to sit and a table. Things like books, toys, paints, board games and CD players (with CD's) are good for keeping you occupied and keeping your mind of of whatever caused you to go down there. A carpet can also keep out the cold and damp.

Make the SR safer! Install a door with a large and secure lock and some bolts that is bulletproof, to protect you from anything or anyone in the house who might be trying to hurt you/kill you.
