How to Make a Typical South Indian Seasoning for Various Dishes

Seasoning plays a very important role in Indian cooking. This article will be focusing on the South Indian style of seasoning a dish. It can be a curry or a chutney. It is the same seasoning made and added to various dishes.


  • 4 Whole and Dried Red Chilies

  • 2 teaspoons Mustard Seeds

  • 2 teaspoons Cumin Seeds

  • 2 teaspoons Split White lentils

  • 1 tablespoon Oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon Asafoetida

    Add oil in a frying pan,

    Add whole and dried red chilies.

    Add mustard seeds.

    Add cumin seeds/

    Sauté them for few seconds. Mustard seeds would splutter and be careful.

    Turn off the gas stove.

    Add asafoetida powder.


  • Add fenugreek seeds while making the chutney.


  • Do not keep the pan for a long time on the gas stove.
