How to Make a Typical English Cake

Have a go at being a chef and make a typical English Cake - it's delicious!

Ingredients

  • 3 eggs
  • 125g / 4.5 oz of castor sugar
  • 250g / 8.8 oz. flour
  • 175g / 6 oz.butter (softened)
  • 100g / 4 oz. raisins and candied fruit
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/2 packet of yeast

    Put the softened butter, castor sugar and salt in a mixing bowl. Beat until smooth.

    Add the eggs one by one, beating after each addition.

    Add the flour and yeast and beat together.

    Wash the raisins and cut up the candied fruit. Stir them into the mixture.

    Grease and lightly flour the cake tin. Pour in the cake mixture.

    Bake for 10 minutes at 210ºC / 410ºF (gas mark 6) and then at 150ºC / 300ºF (gas mark 5) for 35 minutes. Take it out of the oven and turn it out of the tin. The Typical English Cake was ready to serve !

Tips

  • Lightly flour the raisins before adding them to the cake batter. This will prevent them from sinking to the bottom during baking.
