How to Make a Rosette Brooch

Rosettes are a lovely shape for a brooch; they're compact, elegant and can change their appearance according to the fabric used to make them. While it's a little fiddly to make, once you've got the hang of it, you'll find this is an easy and enjoyable craft. It's also a great accessory to make for gift giving.

Measure a strip piece on the fabric. This strip should measure 36 centimeter (14.2 in) in length and 3 centimeter (1.2 in) in width. Mark with pins or fabric pencil, to make it easy to see where to cut.

Cut the strip. Use this strip to cut out another exact same strip from the same fabric.

Stitch the strips together down the edges. For one of the edges, do not knot it off. Instead, pull it gently to gather the strip together into a circle. The strip will form folded over portions as you pull the edge together. Tie the thread together once gathered, then stitch the strip ends together to form a permanent circle. The rosette shape is now formed.

Decorate the rosette. Cut two ribbons to a short length for hanging from the rosette. Cut out a circle of felt, from the same color as the fabric (or a color that complements it). Glue the ends of the ribbon pieces to the back of the felt circle, arranging them to form a "V" shape as they come down from the felt circle.
    • Glue the felt circle to the back of the rosette, the ribbon side facing into the rosette. Allow to dry thoroughly.
    • Cut the ribbon ends with inverted V shapes, to prevent fraying and to improve the appearance.
    • Glue the brooch fitting to the felt circle. Allow to dry thoroughly.
    • Glue a button to the front of the rosette. This must be large enough to cover the circular hole at the front; it neatens the end look. The image shows the final look.

Finished. You now have a neat rosette brooch to wear.

  • The fabric should be chosen with the outfit in mind. Florals, patterns and heavy designs look best on plain colors, while plain fabrics will go well with patterned clothing.
