How to Make a Reusable, Inexpensive, and Efficient Gravity Bong

Three Parts:Making the BowlConstructionUse

This is an update to the well-known, cheap and efficient method of smoking, the gravity bong; specifically the water/soda bottle bong. The main drawback, the unhealthy burning of aluminum foil and melting of plastic, is disposed of in lieu of a healthier, more reusable, permanent solution. It is also portable, so you can pretty much take it anywhere where you are legally permitted to do so.

*Note: The specific dimensions are for one specific size and volume. It is also my preferred method, as it is practical and portable, and VERY potent.

Beware, as one hit (as if you can actually get even close to finishing the bottle) can and WILL end in getting first timers (to the bong, not the tobacco) messed up, in both the best and worst way possible. You have been warned.

The dimensions given are to assure a snug fit of the water bottle in the shaker. For example, you can construct a 2-liter bong (provided you have a big enough container to submerge the 2-liter bottle), as the inner diameters of the bottles are the same.

Part 1
Making the Bowl

  1. 1
Identify the usable socket sizes. They are between ½” and 5/8”, or 12 to 15mm in diameter.
  2. 2
Using the mouth of the water/soda bottle, test the fit of the socket.
  3. 3
Wrap masking tape around the sides of the socket to make a sufficiently airtight seal.
  4. 4
Add layers of tape as to ensure a snug fit.
  5. 5
Place the metal gauze in the socket, to create a “bowl” for the tobacco.

Part 2

Cut a hole in the bottom of the water bottle. Pay special attention to the hole, and test it several times.
    • If the hole is too big, water will flow out too quickly. The objective is to make the water flow out as slowly, but steadily as possible to ensure that the resulting smoke is at its densest, minimizing waste of the vacuum generated in the bottle.
  2. 2
Place the water bottle in the shaker, and fill it with water.
  3. 3
Load and place bowl in mouth of the bottle. Your bong is now ready to use.

Part 3

  1. 1
Grab mouth of bottle and get ready to pull up.
  2. 2
Light contents of bowl while pulling up the bottle slowly, but steadily. Give time for the embers to spread.
  3. 3
Once the bottle is drained of water or the bowl is done, pull off the bowl and inhale the contents of the bottle. Keep in mind that the resulting smoke will be very potent, so don’t inhale too deeply.
  4. 4
Push the bottle back down slowly, as pushing it down too quickly can result in splash damage.
  5. 5
Load and place bowl in mouth of bottle. Repeat step 1.

  • Unlike other methods, gravity bongs require a bit more attention to use efficiently.
    • Try to match the burn rate. Pull it up too slowly, and smoke is wasted into the air; too quickly, and the contents of the bowl may not be completely consumed given the fixed volume of water displaced.
  • Use it right, and one use can be sufficient for up to 3 people.
  • Maintenance: The best part about this piece is that all the parts are cheap and readily available. Change water bottles and water regularly. This is important, as the lack of cleanliness of the bottle can affect the taste, and not in a good way. Occasionally clean the bowl and the shaker using rubbing alcohol.
The socket is a perfect fit for the thumb indent on the shaker lid.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench set. You don’t *have* to buy the set and just go for individual sockets, but please note that each set actually comes with three or four different usable sizes.
  • 28oz Blender bottle or any cylindrical shaker of similar size.
  • Metal gauze. This is the wire mesh screen found on the bottom of tobacco pipes, and can be found in smoke shops.
  • Hobby knife
  • masking tape
