How to Make a Mini Cupcake Stand

Three Methods:Finding the Stand MaterialsCreate the Stand BasesAssembling the Cake Stand

Looking for a pretty display for those mini cupcakes? Instead of just placing cupcakes on the counter or a regular plate, you can fashion a decorative mini cupcake stand that will enhance and display your work.

Method 1
Finding the Stand Materials

    1
Purchase three cake boards. You’ll need cake boards that are 1×8″ (20cm), 1×10″ (25cm) and 1×12″ (30cm). You want to add more tiers, add 1×14″ + 1×16″ cake boards.

    2
Pick up two cake dummies for each cake board. Buy each cake dummy at approximately 2” (5cm) high.

    3
Find decorative paper and ribbon. The paper and ribbon will be a big part of your display so use paper and ribbon that either match the party theme or that complement your mini cupcakes. You will also need an entire spool of ribbon, as you will be winding it around your cake dummies.

Method 2
Create the Stand Bases

    1
Glue the cake dummies together in pairs. Put enough glue in the middle and around the circumference of the dummies so they adhere properly. Don’t move them until they are completely dry.

    2
Wind the ribbon around the exterior of each cake dummy. Pin one end of the ribbon at the top and wind around until you come to the end. You can add glue to the back of the ribbon to help it remain in place. Pin the other end to secure the ribbon in place.

    3
Place the cake board in the middle of the decorative paper and trace around it. You will be creating the top of your cake stand with the decorative paper so make sure your tracing is precise.
    • Cut out the paper tracing to fit the cake board and glue it to the top of the cake board. Use enough glue to ensure it stays in place.

    4
Add ribbon to the side of the cake board. Pin one end in place and then wind the ribbon around to the other end. To ensure it stays in place, run your glue stick around the cake board side before adding the ribbon. Gently press ribbon in place so it sticks to the glue and pin the other end after cutting the ribbon.
    • Cover the ribbon join with a ribbon bow. See the final step's image below for an example.

Method 3
Assembling the Cake Stand

    1
Assemble the cake stand without taping it in place. Make sure you like the way it is tiered using your cake dummies and boards by assembling it without the tape. You could even add a few cupcakes so you can visualize how it will appear.
  2. Image titled Make a Mini Cupcake Stand Step 10
    2
Place the first decorative cake board on a flat surface and find its center. If necessary use a ruler to make sure your cake dummy is centered properly.

    3
Apply the double-sided carpet tape to the cake dummy and hold in place on top of the cake board.

    4
Add the next cake board on top of the dummy. Find the center before adding the double-sided carpet tape.

Continue to build until you have reached the top. Make sure you have enough tape on each cake dummy to ensure it won’t topple over.

Tips

  • Add a decorative jewel at the top of the cake stand for extra sparkle.
  • Cake making supplies can be found at either a craft or cake store.
  • Instead of using decorative paper, you could also use rolled fondant to cover your cake board.
  • Always make sure that when you put the cupcakes on your new cupcake stand, you make sure there is not frosting on the bottom of the cupcake. If there is is then take it off, if you do not then you could ruin your new cupcake stand.

Things You'll Need

  • Stand materials (as above)
  • Glue stick
  • Double stick tape
  • Craft glue
  • Double sided carpet tape
  • Metal pins
  • A pair of sharp scissors
  • A pencil
