How to Make a Fabric Basket with an Animal Motif

Three Methods:Preparing the Base of the BasketAssembling the Fabric Basket BaseAssembling the Body of the Fabric Basket

Gather the loose bits and pieces in your house and place them inside this cute soft fabric storage basket. It's ideal for animal lovers, country- and rustic-themed homes and for anyone who loves all things cute.

Method 1
Preparing the Base of the Basket

  1. 1
Draw a circle base for the basket. It should be a decent size, at least 20cm/8 inches in diameter, or more. Cut this disc out from either thick cardboard or plastic sheeting.
    • If preferred, purchase a round flat disc of some sort that would be suitable to form the basket base.
  2. 2
Cut the fabric into circles. The fabric forms the basket shape, wrapped around the disc and forming upward sides. Cut three pieces as follows:
    • 2 pieces 15cm/6 inches wider than the disc.
    • 1 piece 5cm/2 inches wider than the disc.
  3. 3
Hem the edge of the smaller piece of fabric. Place the card or plastic disc onto the hemmed fabric, with circular cotton fabric sandwiched in the middle.

Method 2
Assembling the Fabric Basket Base

  1. 1
Make up the bottom of the fabric basket.
    • Pull to bunch up (gather) the hemmed thread, in order to wrap the disc in the fabric.
    • Flatten this base piece of fabric flat. Cut off the any excess threads.

Stitch a circle the exact same size as the disc circle in the the two larger circular pieces of fabric (keep both pieces together). Then, stitch 12 even spaces radiating out from the inner stitched circle, to create the basket's pocket divisions. See the image in the following section for guidance on stitching placement (first image of the set).

Method 3
Assembling the Body of the Fabric Basket

Fold up the large stitched circles of fabric around the inner circle. Stuff quilt wadding inside each pocket (12 in total). See image for guidance.

Sew the open edge of each of the pockets in a line. As you sew this, gather it. This causes the edges to stand upright on their own and forms the basket shape.
  3. 3
Embellish the basket. Sew a fabric bow in the same fabric as the basket. Attach it at the back of the basket facing to the front of the basket. Then sew on a cloth animal, such as the rabbit shown in this design, sewing it to the bow, so that it appears that the animal is wearing it.

    • You can either make your own stitched animal, or purchase one ready-made from the dollar store. If making your own, stuff it well so that it stands upright with ease.
    • The animal cannot be too top heavy or it may topple the basket. Choose a design with a solid base and a lightweight top, not too much taller than the fabric basket.
