How to Make a Dust Ruffle

Dust ruffles are a popular bedroom accessory that give any bed a more complete look when used with a comforter. Dust ruffles help keep dust from gathering under your bed, which can reduce a common source of allergens. They also provide a great way to conceal any items stored under your bed. This article explains how to make a dust ruffle.

  1. 1
Use a tape measure to calculate 4 times the distance from the head to the foot of your bed plus the width of your bed.
  2. 2
Cut a piece of fabric that is as long as the distance just measured.
  3. 3
Trim the fabric so that it is as wide as the distance from the space between the mattress and the box springs to the floor, plus 6 inches (15.24 cm).
  4. 4
Fold under a 1/2-inch (1.27 cm) seam along the entire length of the fabric. Press.
  5. 5
Fold the same edge under another 3 inches (7.62 cm) to make a hem. Press.
  6. 6
Stitch a narrow seam along the hemmed edge of the fabric close to the upper folded edge of the hem.
  7. 7
Gather the upper edge of the fabric by using a sewing machine to sew 2 parallel rows of basting stitches, using the longest stitch possible, starting 3/8-inch (.95 cm) from the upper edge.
  8. 8
Pull the bobbin thread that runs along the underside of the fabric gently to make gathers. Even out the gathers across the entire length of the fabric.
  9. 9
Sew the dust ruffle to a sturdy length of ribbon or other strip of sturdy fabric.
  10. 10
Attach one side of hook-and-loop buttons or strips cut into squares to the band portion of the dust ruffle. Align and attach the second side of the hook-and-loop pieces to the fitted sheet on 3 of the 4 sides, leaving one of the shorter ends free since the dust ruffle doesn't need to cover the top portion of the bed (under the headboard).

  • As an alternative to using a fitted sheet, use muslin or another inexpensive fabric pieced and sewn together to equal the dimensions of the top of your box spring, allowing additional room on all sides for seams on 3 sides and a hem on the remaining side.
  • The easiest way to make sure the dust ruffle is attached evenly around the bed is to mark the placement points on the fitted sheet with straight pins prior to attaching the dust ruffle.
  • Using hook-and-loop fasteners allows you to remove the dust ruffle easily for cleaning. However, an alternative is to sew the dust ruffle directly to the fitted sheet.
  • Use a machine-washable, non-stretchy fabric for your dust ruffle for easy cleaning.
  • Attach the dust ruffle to the fitted sheet on the top side of the box spring slightly inside the edge so that the top edge of the dust ruffle will be hidden by the mattress.
