How to Make a Claim on Home Insurance

It can be hard to make a claim on your home insurance policy. You need to know exactly how to go about this demanding task, especially if you have never made a claim before. Most people take out a home insurance policy during the closing process, without really looking at what the policy says. Many aspects of the policy only come up when it is time to make a claim. Here are the common steps that most policyholders take to file a claim.

    Read your policy carefully. Before submitting an application for a claim, go over your policy and get an idea of what is covered--and how.
    • Research specific perils to see if your damage is covered. Many home policies have elaborate rules on different kinds of home damage, where only some types of coverage apply. It may also make a difference how the damage happened. Even if you have coverage for one peril, the company could try to deny the claim if some other element was involved. Know what you are covered for and evaluate how it applies to your situation.
    • Look at values and extents of coverage. Make sure you have the amount of coverage you need to reimburse the actual damages the event caused to your home.

    Collect documentation. The next major step in submitting your home insurance claim is to provide full documentation for the damage and the value of home elements, appliances, possessions or other damages you incurred.
    • Use existing value lists for home elements and possessions. If you did your homework when you took out a home policy, you may have made a list of values, including the costs of additions to the home. These can come in handy as attachments to your claim.
    • Take photos of the damage to prove what was done. Show how you experienced a loss in value that justifies your claim amount.

    Find a claim application for your insurance company. Some of these are available online or by request to the company's customer service department.

    Fill in all appropriate forms entirely. Make sure you have filled in the forms well, with all of the information the insurance company needs to evaluate your claim.
    • Include current contact information. Without this, your claim could be unresolved for a longer time.

    Contact underwriting or other departments responsible for evaluating your claim. After you have sent in your home policy claim, figure out where it goes within the insurance company and get the contact information for the claims adjuster.

    Check back periodically with the claims adjuster about the progress of your claim. Some home insurance policyholders find themselves waiting a long time for responses to their claims. Be proactive about handling your claim to get it resolved quicker.


  • Here is the list of standard documents any insurer would seek in case of death by natural reasons:
    • Filled claim intimation form
    • Original policy document
    • Original death certificate
    • Original certificate by physician who last attended
    • Past & present medical/hospitalization documents
    • Cremation/burial certificate
  • In case death is by an unnatural cause, say by accident, additional documents must be produced::
    • Police report
    • Police panchnama/FIR
    • Post mortem report
    • Chemical analysis report, if any
    • Some might ask to produce newspaper cutting with photograph of the accident, if available. All these must be duly certified by respective authorities. In case of maturity claim, duly filled maturity claim form must be submitted.
  • If there has been delay in intimating them be prepared with a reason (reasonable one!) for the delay. Don’t leave any stone unturned while making the claim, to avoid unnecessary hassles adding to your woes, keep every relevant document ready even if they might not require it.
