How to Make a Checklist when Packing a Suitcase

So only a couple of days before your big trip? Are you worried that you packed everything? It's best to make a checklist, that way you know you have everything. After all, the stuff most forgotten are the little things.

Find a suitcase or a bag that is large enough for you to pack what you think you'll need. Remember, this is all the space you will have to pack your necessities and bring back souvenirs.

Get out a paper and pencil.

Write down the absolute necessities first! You can live in California without twenty fur coats but not without your mouthwash.

When planning your absolute necessities, make sure to plan ahead. Even though it's not time now, girls; it may be your time of the month when you get there. If you're crossing multiple time zones, you may be late, early or skip it completely. Also, consider the fact that shampoo and conditioner in hotels is cheap and not that great. To buy your own when you get there is more expensive than at home.

Try to visualize how much room your necessities will take up in your suitcase. If you have the time, actually pack these things into your suitcase. See how much room is left.

Now you can plan your luxuries. An extra pair of shoes, some notebooks, makeup, or video games can go here. Write down what you want to take with you.

Now you have your checklist. Look at it again the next day or so. Your opinion on it may be different than it was before. Realize you don't need something? Scratch it off. Forgot something? Just add it on!

After the trip, write down what you wish you'd have brought and what you didn't need (or brought too much of). This will help if you go to Grandma's in Montreal and Uncle Bob's in Pennsylvania every year!

Tips

  • Keep this list with you at all times, and run through it when re-packing before checking out of a hotel to ensure that you have everything you came with.
  • It's best if you make a list about a week or two in advance, that way you can look after it a couple of times. We're only human; we forget!
  • Always pack more than what you think you need (e.g. an extra change of clothes) in case of emergency or extended stay.
  • You can make a checklist organized when you put it on the computer.

Warnings

  • If something is irreplaceable, priceless or would be costly or difficult to replace, don't bring it. Find some way to label or mark anything you do bring.
  • When packing your luxuries, remember that items on vacation are easily lost or stolen.
