A canteen yard sale is where you sell food and drink from your yard, just like a yard sale. Here is how to run a clean, legal, profitable canteen yard sale.

Method 1
1 - 2 months before

    Contact your local council/read the local laws, and find out if it is legal to sell food and beverages in your local area.

Method 2
3 weeks before

    Write a list of foods and drinks you are going to buy/make. A list may go something like this:
    • Jug of cloudy lemonade
    • Jug of squash
    • Pot of tea
    • Pot of coffee
    • Assorted chocolate bars
    • Sandwiches of various fillings
    • Fruit

    Buy any dry, long lasting ingredients, like flour, sugar etcetera.

Method 3
1 week before

    Find a place you can sell your food and beverages. For example, if you live on a busy street, do it on your front yard. But if you live on a quiet street, see if you can do it on a friends front yard.

    Write up a list of prices for things. For example:
    • 1 cup of coffee, tea or cocoa = £0.90
    • 1 sandwich = £1.45 And so on

Method 4
The day before

    Make up any cakes, biscuits and things like that. On wikiHow, there are plenty of cake recipes!

    Make up a large, colourful sign, saying 'CANTEEN YARD SALE. CHEAP FOODS AND DRINKS AVAILABLE!'

    Make up some leaflets listing foods and drinks you will be selling, and from what times, and your address.

    Post the leaflets through local doors, and if possible, put a few up around town.

    Make up a large piece of paper, with cake and biscuit names, and the ingredients listed on it (just in case anyone is allergic).

    Find a container to keep money in, and make up the following change:
    • £1/$1 worth of pennies/cents.
    • £10/$10 worth of £1/$1 coins.
    • A handful of five, ten, twenty and fifty pence/cent coins.
    • 3 £10/$10 notes.
    • 5 £5/$5 notes.

Method 5
The morning of the canteen sale

    Make up any sandwiches, drinks et cetera.

During the sale

After the sale

    Consider anything that went wrong. For example, if a particular type of drink didn't sell well, next time put it as one cup free with something that sold well.

    Count your money, and see if you made profit. If you didn't, next time rise the prices a little, or put up less variety.

Tips

  • Popular chocolate/snack bars that will probably sell well are: Baby Ruth, Wispa, Crunchie, Twix, Milk Dud, Peanut Butter cups, Hershey Bar, Fry's Turkish delight.

Warnings

  • The first time may not be profitable, but don't let it put a damper on things.
