How to Maintain a Healthy Weight As a Kid

Maintaining a healthy weight through childhood will reduce the risk of children being overweight/obese when they grow up. Being overweight or obese can lead to many health problems such as diabetes, being more prone to infections, etc. Be healthy!

    Don't eat junk food everyday. Once in a while is okay, but all around, candy and soda isn't great for you. It's filled with empty calories that don't keep you full, but instead make you unhealthy. Watch what you eat, and be careful.

    Eat protein. Protein helps keep your muscles and bones strong, and keeps you energized and pumped up throughout the day. It will also stop you from becoming too light, or underweight. Fish, chicken, tofu, nuts, eggs, and many more foods contain protein. Make sure you are getting protein in at least one meal a day.

    Eat fruits and veggies! Fruits and vegetables are essential for growing and staying healthy. Apples, oranges, broccoli, cauliflower, pretty much any fruit or vegetable you can think of is good for you if you don't add any bad stuff to it. Have fruits and veggies in at least 2 meals a day, in order for you to stay healthy and strong.

    Don't eat too much. Only eat until you are full, and that's it. Don't force yourself to finish what's on your plate, even if it's just a bite. When your brain tells you that your stomach is becoming stuffed, put down your spoon and stop.

    Take a 15 minute walk everyday! Taking a brisk walk daily can have many benefits on you. It will help you sleep better, have a physically fit body, make you happy and healthy because of the sunlight and vitamin D you're getting, and much more. Take the stairs instead of the elevator/escalator if you can. Walking is good.

    Play some sports. Sports will keep you healthy, since you're exercising. Exercising makes you happy. Remember to not be afraid to sweat, sweating means that you're working and keeping fit and healthy. Sign up for some lessons.

    Drink water. Water is so important! Take your body weight in lbs, divide that by 2, and drink that many ounces of water a day. Water is really important. It helps keep your skin healthy and clear, your body clean, and it's refreshing.

    Sleep well. It is recommended school-aged children get 10-11 hours of sleep a night, but make sure to be getting a minimum of 9 hours of sleep nightly in order to lower the risk of being overweight or underweight. Sweet dreams!

Tips

  • If you're planning to lose or gain weight, keep track of your daily caloric intake.
  • Instead of eating ice cream, eat frozen yogurt! Yum.
  • A bit of dark chocolate, if you like that, is great for you in moderation.
  • Don't become obsessed with your weight, just try to be healthy.
  • Green tea is great for you and boosts your metabolism.

Warnings

  • Do not starve yourself or make yourself vomit to lose weight.
  • Do not constantly eat junk food and fats to gain weight.
