How to Look Like Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

Marilyn Monroe starred in the 1953 movie, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, with Jane Russell. As she sang Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend in a strapless pink dress, dripping in extravagant jewels, she defined the elegant mood of the decade.

  1. 1
Pin curl your hair. This is a beauty must-have for recreating this look.
    • Pin curls tend to work best on shorter hair, especially in a similar cut to Marilyn Monroe and other starlets of the period.
    • You will need damp hair, sprayed with a mix of setting lotion and water (the ratio of water to lotion will depend on the thickness of your hair, and the desired set you are going for). Section your hair into 1 inch sections, comb though and loop the hair under your fingers and wrap, forming a roll, continue to roll up until you reach the hair shaft. Then secure with a duckbill clip. Continue for the rest of the head, with standing pin curls on the bangs.
    • Leave to set overnight! Then brush out in the morning, moulding and shaping the hair as you go.

    Apply your fifties style makeup
    • Start with a good foundation as your base. With a light pink/peach tone blush.
    • A subtle sweep of a matte eyeshadow or slightly shimmery one in a neutral tone is all you need. Of course, you will add a winged liner to this, Marilyn didn't have an exaggerated cat eye, so keep it small.
    • Signature red lips are a necessity, and feel free to go slightly over your lip line them to recreate her pout and to mimic the lip shape of the 1950s.

    Get dressed!
    • For the show-stopping dress of the movie, you'll need a full-length, red sequin dress with a deep neckline. Ideal for formal evening events, or for a performance!
    • For daywear, opt for a chic black pencil dress complete with a leopard print muff and matching oversized scarf.
    • A royal blue wiggle dress with a stiff stand up collar has been reproduced by many vintage inspired brands, and is a key piece to looking like Marilyn Monroe
