How to Learn to Use Window Light in Your Photography
Want to really 'get' how window light works in respect to your photography? Here is an exercise that will show you a great way to do it!
Steps
- 1Be sure you have a model. Your kids can sometimes be bribed and you might even have someone who wants a good picture taken of them!
- 2Make sure that the person is not going to get bored and want to leave after a couple of shots.
- 3Have a window to use. Your basic square window is the best for this exercise.
- 4Put your subject directly in front of the window.
- 5Have your subject turn about 45 degrees to face you. Look at how the light is showing on them. Note the gradual progressions from dark to light.
- 6Have your subject turn another 45 degrees (90 degrees) so that the sun is either on his left or right, completely. Note the harsher edge of the light.
- 7Have your subject turn their head towards the light. Keep his or her body in the same position.
