How to Keep Horse Shavings Clean and White

Shavings can be a nightmare to keep clean, and you may constantly find yourself putting a new bag down only to find it brown and dark a few days later.

  1. 1
Take out all the main droppings. The big clumps first and don't worry too much about the smaller bits just yet.
  2. 2
Get your shavings fork and pile all the clean shavings on top of the banks so you have two or three big piles of clean shavings..
    • After you have piled all the clean shavings up you will be able to see the wet patches clearly just scrape all these up and put them in the barrow.
  3. 3
Push the fork into the pile and toss it up to the top this will make and small droppings roll down the pile making it easy to pick up.
  4. 4
Start pulling the shavings down. Make sure it's all evenly spread before you start putting the banks up.
  5. 5
When you're happy with the bed just do one last check and just pick and droppings you can see out (yes even those tiny ones we like to ignore).

  • Wet bedding is the cause of all this brown bed nonsense get it out!
  • If your mucking out and then coming back later to ride or finish off your jobs or something when you get the wet up brush the floor and leave the floor to dry out( this is super handy if you have rubber mats because you could lift them up as well).
  • If you really want to get the bed spotless get a pair of rubber gloves and pick out all the bits by hand or if your brave (which i am not!) just use your bare hands.
  • when you're finished it always looks nice if the banks are the same height and all square also patting the bed down so its all level looks really nice as well.
  • don't obsess, once you get used to doing this everyday you be able to do it faster each time.
