    Keep your horse reassured at all times. Stroke him and give him the occasional treat.

    Leave the horse be once he is in his stable and eating happily to let him settle in and begin to relax.

    Rub your horse's wither with your hand as you are riding. It will relax him and he should accept the it more easily.

    Relax yourself. If you are tense then it will only make your horse more tense.

    Breathe. Whatever happens remember to breathe. It sounds like a silly thing to tell someone but a lot of people panic and forget to breathe correctly. This also makes the horse tense and it makes you tense.

    Check your girth regularly to make sure it isn't pinching your horse's sides or that it isn't too loose.

    Remember that different horses will respond to different things. There is no sure way to tell what any animal will prefer and it really is a matter of trial and error.

Tips

  • Try bringing your horse to some practice shows so he gets used to the atmosphere (i.e. the loud speakers, other horses, etc.) You do not actually have to show him at these 'practice shows' you can just lead him around and get him used to it.
  • Try petting and grooming the horse they will relax more with the comfort of a good friend or companion.
