How to Include the Father of the Bride

It is important to include all of the parents during the planning and day of a big wedding. The bride's father, though, may need a little extra attention to get through his little girl's big day. Follow these steps to be sure to include the father of the bride.

Steps

Ask him if he'd like to go dress or tux shopping.
    • He may choose to go either way. If you are a daddy's little girl, the father of the bride may rather go look at wedding dresses with the girls rather than the tuxes with the guys. Or, maybe he isn't interested in either, but just giving him the option of giving an opinion about the clothing will let him know you value his opinion and want him to play an active role in the wedding.

Use his input, not just his credit card.
    • The bride's father should have the option of giving an opinion for any of the items that he will be paying for. For example, if he is going to be paying for the cake, invite him along to the cake tasting. Or, if he is paying for the florist, ask him if he'd like to see what you are thinking about ordering before making the final purchase. Let him have as much of a voice as he would, or wouldn't, like to have when it comes to how his money is going to be used.

    Invite him the bachelor party.
    • This could be a great way to include the father of the bride depending on the relationship your groom has with your father. It is important to remember, too, that there are often many different activities that make up the bachelor party, so the father of the bride could be invited to only select events -- just enough so that he feels a part of the pre-wedding celebration.

Let him know he is welcome to join either the women or the men.
    • The father of the bride is unique, since he has a set role walking his daughter down the aisle on the day of the wedding. Yet, since he is a man, he can also be included in whatever the men are doing that day. Let the bride's father know he is welcome to be with whomever he would like to be that day. He may choose to have lunch with the bride and her bridesmaids and then get ready with the guys. Or maybe he'd like to get ready on his own and then join the guys for some pictures right before the ceremony. Let him know that it is entirely up to him. Be sure to let him know, though, if there is something you would especially like him to be involved in.

    Spend some time with him.
    • The wedding day can be a bittersweet day for the bride's dad. Make sure you pull him aside to have a few minutes with him alone before the ceremony. Or maybe, when you are waiting to walk down the aisle with him, let him know how much you appreciate and love him. Even the smallest reminders that you aren't leaving him behind can make a world of difference.
