How to Improve Your Paddling Strength for Surfing

Paddling is one of the most tiring aspects of surfing and it's important that you have the strength for it. Building up strength for paddling takes a bit of time but is well worth the effort, as you'll tire less and have more energy for getting back in the water each time.

    Paddle. The best method to improve your strength is to get out there in the ocean and paddle! While this may sound obvious, so many surfers just want to surf that they neglect to practise paddling as an important method in its own right.

    Get to the swimming pool. You won't be able to get to the ocean every day unless you live on top of it. So, make use of the local swimming pool to improve your paddling technique.
    • Do sprints of 1 to 2 lengths of the pool. Sprints work best because they push you and force you to work hard in a short space of time.

    Do cardio exercises. Paddling is a cardiovascular exercise. Therefore, anything that improves your cardiovascular system is going to help with your paddling strength. Try running, cycling, letting the dog take you for a walk, running on the sand, aerobic workouts, etc.

    Work on upper body strength. The greater your upper body strength, the better you'll find your paddling power. Push-ups are great for increasing your strength.

Tips

  • Learn how to ride the rip. This will make it easier on you when paddling.
  • Making short quick strokes, as opposed to the long reaches a beginning surfer makes, can improve your paddling efficiency.
