How to Help Stop the Genocide in Darfur

Since February of 2003, a genocide in Darfur, a region of the African country Sudan, has been going on. 400,000 people have died already. 2.5 million have been forced to leave their homes and relocate, often to refugee camps, which aren't safe either. An estimated 10,000 to 15,000 others are dying monthly. This is being carried out by the government of Sudan. They know what they are doing; it is being done purposefully and by no means is it simply a tragic accident. These people need our help. As fellow human beings, we owe it to them to do everything we can to assist. This is a list of various things one can do to go about helping to stop this horrible genocide occurring right now.

    Educate others. This is possibly one of the best things to do, for there are those out there who are completely unaware. Talk to others about the situation, hold discussion groups and presentations, write and publish letters and articles, make short documentaries, do whatever you feel will reach people and inspire them to take action.

    Fundraise. Go about this in a way you think will be effective. From benefit dinners to concerts, from selling various items to simply taking donations, ideas are endless. Make sure people know the purpose behind the event, and where the money will go.

    Attend rallies and fundraising events. In addition to raising money to aid Darfur, these can also be a lot of fun.

    Organize a lobby visit. Gather together a group of people and plan a meeting with your Congress representatives. Encourage them to support legislation aiding genocide relief efforts. has good materials on making your visit effective.

    Write letters to the President, your representatives and senators, your White House liaison, Ban Ki-Moon (secretary general of the United Nations)... There are numerous people, people with the power to make a drastic change for the better. Write to them, voicing your concerns and encouraging them to take action.

    Buy 'Save Darfur' products. There are shirts, hoodies, hats, wristbands, bumper stickers, lawn signs, posters, postcards, magnets, etc. This is a good way to raise awareness, and money is sent to a relief organization. In addition, they are rather inexpensive. These products can be bought at

    Stay informed. Sign up for e-mail updates about the happenings in Darfur. Know what goes on. You can do this at and at a host of other sites as well

    Encourage others to take action. After all, the more, the merrier.

    Keep this genocide in your thoughts and prayers. Whatever you do, DO NOT forget. Tell others about the situation whenever you have the opportunity. Do what you can to end this atrocity and make it the final genocide in history. Hopefully, after this we can say, "Never again" and finally make it so.


  • Don't get discouraged. It may seem overwhelming at times, and as if your efforts aren't helping at all. Nothing could be further from the truth. Remember this.
