How to Have a Belief in Reincarnation

You may have heard about the idea of reincarnation; that after we die we are all reborn. Perhaps you are studying Hinduism or Buddhism or for some other reason would like to believe in reincarnation but you're not entirely sure you do. The Buddha taught that you should never simply believe something because you've been taught it but should check it against your own experience, but how do you actually do that? Follow these Steps to investigate reincarnation so you can apply your own judgement.

Read up on reincarnation. To believe in something, you must at least understand what it is. Go to the bookstore, library, or search topics on the internet. Look for Hindu, Buddhist, New Age and Wiccan approaches to reincarnation.

Search for examples that some people believe show proof of incarnation. There are well-known cases where children have gone to strange towns and known residents there and even insisted that a certain home was theirs. Do these stories ring true for you or do you think adults prompted them?

Sometimes reading something is proof enough but for true skeptics you must find more solid proof. Look for reincarnation proof in everything and everyone around you. What mechanism creates a child prodigy like Mozart? Could child prodigies simply have learnt their skills in previous lives and now remember them? Do you have friends with incredible skills that came really easily to them?

Ask other people what they think about the idea of reincarnation? If they believe in it, do they have any examples they believe prove it?

Think. Think undisturbed thoughts about life, death, in-between, and reincarnation. Consider whether it makes more sense to you that your mind simply stops existing after death. And if it doesn't, what do you think could happen to it, besides reincarnation?

Be persistent. Accepting new ideas takes time, as does finding proof that something is incorrect. Take time to ensure your research totally convinces you.

  • Be steadfast and have determination with this. Beliefs cannot be formed overnight, and you must know what you're believing in.
  • Remember that scientists such as Thomas Huxley and Gustafson Stromberg believed reincarnation was a plausible idea.
