wikiHow to Go Urban Exploring

Urban exploring can be a wonderful thing to do in your free time. It involves discovering new and maybe lonely places, taking pictures and making new experiences.

    Choose a place or area. This does not have to be urban and it does not have to be illegal or abandoned, either. You could start just outside your door or in the city centre, behind an empty house or in a residential area with blocks of flats. As urban areas are mostly the most complex, they are the most interesting, though.

    Choose comfortable shoes. Nothing's worse than having to go home early because your feet hurt.

    Pack your bag. Use a backpack, not a handbag. Take some food and drinks. Also take things you might need like a torch/lighter or money. (You might feel extra hungry or discover a nice shop.) Don't forget enough warm clothes if it is cold and sun lotion if the sun is shining.

    Start walking. Try to go places you wouldn't normally go. Try doors to see if they're open. Go behind things, inside, on top or underneath.

    Look out for interesting things like objects hanging or standing somewhere or lying on the floor, views, graffiti, stickers, secret doors, sculptures etc.

    Don't forget to look upwards once in a while, wherever you are!

    Follow the three rules of urban exploring:
    • Take nothing but pictures.
    • Leave nothing but footprints.
    • Break nothing but silence.


  • Go Urban Exploring with a friend, it is safer and more fun and you'll have plenty to talk about while you're exploring and afterward. Besides, four eyes see more than two.
  • Take a camera so you can take pictures of things you see. Taking pictures is often the whole point of urban exploring.
  • Always take a mobile phone with you and tell people that, and where you're going urban exploring. Make sure there is someone you will be able to reach at all times and that you can always be reached.


  • Stay safe. Do not go to places that are clearly signposted saying they're dangerous. Do not go to places you have the feeling could be bad for your health or where accidents could happen.
  • Do not disturb anyone's privacy.
  • Don't go to places it's illegal to go to, you might get into serious trouble.
