How to Give a Monologue Without Being Nervous
Speaking in public need not be scary if you only adopt certain tricks. Research. Rehearse. Relax.
Steps
- 1Research your topic thoroughly and work out what you propose to say.
- 2Prepare a series of headings and write out a short paragraph for each. Use separate cards or a sheet of paper.
- 3Write out an introduction in which you explain what you will be talking about.
- 4Write out a conclusion in which you recap what you've said.
- 5Practice your speech over and over, preferably in front of a mirror.
- 6Take along the cards or notes, even if you have learnt the monologue thoroughly.
- 7Carry out a relaxation exercise before starting. E.g. Deep breathing, tensing your fists and then relaxing your hands etc.
- 8Address your speech to individual members of the audience. Shift your gaze from one to the other as you speak.
Tips
- Until you have gained experience, do not digress from your preparation.
- Speak slowly and pronounce each word clearly.
- Sip water if your mouth goes dry.
- Adapt your manner to your particular audience.
- Remember, the audience is on your side (usually!).
- Ask a friend to watch you rehearse.
