Take the steps in articles as "Guidelines". Any article is written by people who have a different personalities, who have been through different experiences, live in different places etc. People write articles on the basis of what they find and their interpretation of it. Taking these articles "literally" would not be a right thing to do as some of the methods may not work for you.
    • For example Rules in any game are enforced on each and every player during the game but even after the rules every player plays the game differently. They have a different style, different approach but still they follow the same rules.

Try different methods. It may not be easy to find what works for you and what doesn't, its because many people don't know much about themselves.
    • One example would be some people like Hotmail better than Gmail and some vice versa, however if you haven't used anyone of them then it would be hard to tell which one you would like. So the best way to know about yourself is to try out different things. Steve Jobs said "To love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don't settle."
    • Try it several times. If you learn a method and try it but it doesn't work the first time that does not mean it is flawed or doesn't work. There could be so many reason why it didn't work the first few times like anxiety, uncertainty, circumstances may be different etc.
    • For example Public speaking, if someone gives you guidelines for public speaking and when you following those guidelines you try it for the first time and it doesn't work the first time that does not mean the guidelines were flawed.
    • Be truthful. Try not to make predictions or assumptions about yourself after you read something. In reality things could be very different.
    • For example after you learn about skateboarding don't lie to yourself by making predictions or assumptions that could be false like 'its not for me' or 'I m gonna break my leg or my nose', etc. Be truthful. The truth is you don't know what would happen if you skateboard. The truth is you don't know until you try it.
    • Have fun. Having fun is the most important thing. Remember if you are not having fun even after doing something several time then its going to be very hard to learn it or it may not be your cup of tea.

Speed of implementation. After you read some article, apply the steps, immediately.
    • The most successful people are those who implement what they learn right away without wasting time on non-sense thoughts or unproductive activities. This is something which would save a lot of time and effort in the long run.
    • The faster you will apply or try the methods after learning, the better would your grasp on them. This is the deeper truth which underlies in every aspect of life. The more you delay, more likely you are going to lose it and its going to take more effort and time in the long run. For example if you read in some article that says 'regularly brushing teeth in a vertical motion helps whitens the teeth', the most effective way to get the best results would be to apply it immediately, doesn't matter if its not night or morning, and doing it on a regular basis.

Learn just enough that you can apply. Everyone has a different personality, some people may read a lot in a hope to apply it all but in the end overwhelm themselves and apply a little while some people learn some and implement it all. One of the things that you can do is to maintain a to do list where you would be able to write all the things which you want to try.
    • Don't involve Ego. Know your personality, know your capacity and try your best not to involve your ego doing things like comparing yourself with other people like 'He can do this much so I can do it too'. Ego is something which is a big reason for our troubles.

Share. If you learned something, applied it and it worked for you then share with people through mediums like this. It not only helps you learn it even better but also helps people reading about it. You would be doing a huge disservice to yourself and people if you share it without understanding it or trying it yourself unless its coming from an authentic source.

It's "OK" to make mistakes. Many people start beating themselves up after a failure or when they make a mistake which is a very unproductive action, in fact it has been researched that you are more likely to make the same mistake again if you beat yourself for it.
    • Don't be hard on yourself when you make a mistake but do acknowledge that you made a mistake, learn from it and fix it immediately. Remember the most successful people are those who implement things quickly right after learning them.
